As you've asked for a preference , I'll say todays

But my favourite era is going to be the next one - I am keen to see what bodybuiders will look like in 2050 !!

Hopefully "pretty" physiques will be a thing of the past by then

70's for me.Looked like the most fun to be around thanks to Arnold and pals. The physiques were the right blend of mass and definition. As mentioned before they also looked healthy which is a word which I dont think can be levelled at the top pros today.Dr Zoidberg, what do you mean by the pretty physiques thing?Meaning that the awards go to the more symmetrical/defined physique rather than the mass monster? When was the last time that happened?Zane maybe,30 odd years ago!

I think todays - I personally think Pro Bodybnuilding has to be about MASS there are lots of smaller, well defined, toned, symmetrical peeopls around so at the top level it's about just looking super-human.

All impressive though so full respect to them all.

Can I just ask - did they ahev gear back in the 50's? Casue there are some awesome physiques there esp if they're natural!

Just a quick passage mate.

Performance enhancing drug use as we recognize it today probably started back in the 1930's when synthetic testosterone was first synthesized. By the late1940's and early 1950's athletes had begun to recognize the size and strength building benefits of the male hormone. When the Russian weightlifting team, thanks no doubt to synthetic testosterone, dominated the 1952 Olympics, Dr John Ziegler, an American physician decided that American competitors should have the same advantage.

In the late 1950’s, thanks to Ziegler’s help, U.S. pharmaceutical companies began to develop the first anabolic drugs
.

A lot of people claim that Aesthetics / lines / symmetry are often sarcrificed in favour pure mass

Whereas I think it is just a big a crime (if not more of a crime !) to sacrifice mass to fulfill the other parameters

I want it all thanks ! - IMO the Aesthetics are worthless unless the mass is also present

Personally , I find the Mass freaks of today still have the balance right ! I look at some of the pictures of Ronnie Coleman and see EVERYTHING there !! - I don't buy into the idea that he is lacking in aesthetics at all

Whereas I look at Frank Zane and feel his lack of mass is enough for me not to be too interested in his physique

For me freaky mass is what bodybuilding is all about - Aesthetics / symmetry is just the tie-breaker

Today...
look at the bb'ers at the turn of the century...
Flex Wheeler
Kevin Levrone
Dexter Jackson
Branch Warren

are just a few that spring to mind all of whom have amazing physiques imo.

Although the 80s had Gaspari....

Today.

Dexter p1sses all over the 50s 60s & 70s for shape and symetry and the mass monsters of today are amazing. So what's not to like??

For me whats not to like is the bloated look of some of the mass monsters. No way im knocking them ..i admire the dedication they put into it..they live it and breathe it which has put them where they are. But for me the physiques of the 50' , 60s and 70's are without a doubt my favourites. I just think they look so much more natural and well balanced. Times bought us a lot of scientific advancements though.

Cant answer the question as there are physiques that are very good in all eras. I think its not an era that i admire most but the quality of physique that should and does transcend time
