Squatting with squat rack - May 8 2008 16:32:42

Hi guys

Couple of quick questions for you

I've just bought a squat rack but its got no safety catchers in case you fail at the bottom.

For the times when I've got no spotter, whats the safest way to use it? Would you just go for weights you're not gonna fail on?

Also, when I have got a spotter, whats the safest way for them to work? ie if you fail at the bottom, is the spotter there to take the bar off of you and lower it to the ground? Or assist you in getting back up to the top in the same way as if spotting a bench press?

Thanks

Ian

I personally wouldn't ever go to failure on something like squats (unless that counts missing a max single)

However, attach heavy duty chains from the top, looping down to the height you'd want the pins. You can also do rack pulls, goodmornings, and squats off of these chains

Thanks mate

Its this one that I bought

http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/store/product.asp?pf%5Fid=Bodymax%5FSquat%5FStands&dept%5Fid=10

As you can see, it has actually got safety catchers (which is why i bought it).

However, from trying it today, I've had a nightmare with the logistics of it cos the catcher's are too small - you have to step a few inches away from the stands so that you don't end up colliding with them as you squat and then you end up missing the catchers.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by this mate - are you able to explain a bit better how this works or attach a photo link? Are you talking about actually having the barbell on a chain?

LOL, you've got to be taking the piss mate!

I use what i'd call stands which are very look alike despite being much older. Cant see any problem with that. Train safely enough to know what weight you will be having trouble with, then train outside in case you feel like dropping weights off the floor. Have fun!

Its poss I just hven't mastered them yet tho I do think its a lot to do with the safeth catchers being very small - I often squat down and find that I'm not directly above them and the bar would actually miss them if I went down lower than the height of the catchers.

I prob will do what you suggest (at least for the mo with weather being nice) and take them out in my back garden so I can just drop the weight if need be without worrying about the floorboards!

On the plus side, the safety catchers are very handy for benching solo. I've finally been able to have a crack at 1RM's.

Fair enough!
I thought there for a minute you werent serious talking about these safety pins/catches. I think they're only good for hanging coats, these wont protect you in the squat like a cage would. A spotter is useful, if you cant ask anyone and since you'll be training home, dropping the bar back is what seems to be only alternative. This is what i do, never ask for a spotter either but i dont recommand it.

115kg will be limitating very quickly especially in the squat. You're the judge!
