we all have respect for certain people and show respect for others ? ..... or so we think.....

We all know times change, i have been posting on this board for nearly seven years (yes i ought to get a life) and still love debating and helping people where i can, along with learning and taking on new ideas....this is what MT has brought to me and this is what i have tried to give back (although not always succesful). many of you will not know me as i read a lot more than i post, mainly in the training forums, but have made some great mates and had a lot of laughs at the various MT meet ups, this to me is what the whole board is about, debating, humour, helping and RESPECTING other members.. i do now believe the latter is disapearing fast..

i popped into general as i was asked by a mate, to be horrified about some of the comments made on a certain guys girl..a page and a half of people calling her a "minger" what sort of respect is this giving to anyone.. we all have different views on people and all see different people in a different way, what right did these people have to comment on her, someone they did not know.. it really saddens me that people can get judged before they get known, if they had nothing worth while to say then why jump on the band wagon and comment in the first place... how would the girl feel if she read those comments, but i suppose the members who made the comments would not be bothered as they would never get to meet her...

how does this sort of thing look to new members, people who want to come on here for help and advice, to get into the best shape they can, with a little help from members, if i was a new member i would certainly be thinking twice, the thought of being rediculed, belittled, how is that gonna effect a persons self esteem and motivation... we all have to start somewhere, we all end up somewhere else, but if someone along the way can give a little time and patience and a push in the right direction then its a start...rather than just sit and rip the pi$$

well this is my rant over, just think before you post and show a little respect, give a little back to MT as we have all benifieted from it in the past...

show some respect

Agreed Scruffy and glad you posted this, the above is exactly what it should be, a little consideration for others.

If it was the girl herself posting for dietary/training help then I very much doubt anyone would have posted anything other than the useful information and support she was seeking. If I were to guess why this would make a difference, I would say it's because no-one really intended anything malicious by their comments in the other thread. As far as I could tell it was a couple of lads ripping another lad for pulling a girl that the other lads didn't find particularly attractive. Has society really reached the point where even light-hearted banter, and it was banter at the end of the day, is frowned upon to the extent that a seperate thread has to be made, *after* James closed the old one? I mean come on. No harm was meant, and as far as I can tell, none was inflicted. Assuming Frankenjim can get his phone working again, I very much doubt he's going to let the opinions of anonymous forum goers affect his life-choices, and I doubt even more that the girl in question is going to track Jim down to this forum, explore the general forum and crash into a state of depression and low self-esteem.

i can see your point but it is not contained to one thread, more and more people who are putting pics up just to show there progress (however little or good, still progress) to have there thread ruined by people not showing some respect,, why the need to comment deogratory comments, this board is primary, for me, about helping and encouraging people in our chosen sport, not to ridicule people because they are not as good as others...

i think you are missing the point some what, people reading who do not know the guy and girl (as i did not) will see it as blatent pi$$ take, would you put pics up and ask for advice if you thought you had the possibility of a backlash like this...

i actually posted this in the moderators forum as i dont often air my thoughts of this nature on the open board.. i am not making a mountain out of a molehill as you put it....but this is not an islolated case, and it annoyed me to the extent that i had to say something.....got nothing to do with anyone else, as i stated this was IMO and my rant.....

Hello Hello,

@: Scruffy, I think as Fintan has pointed out i think most if not all were said as a joke light hearter bantan between blokes, I mean im sure her mates were ripping on her the next day for pulling a egg head, Or some thing that came out of a horror film, I have been told i look like some one out of steptoe and son? I mean i find that funny, I mean gota have a laugh and Banta what makes the world go round.

Its also part of veiws and opion's i think, I mean if a member really did mean a comment with hurt in mind then at the end of the day isnt that there opion? weather i or any one else likes it not? I say that in a question context. I mean even if they did mean it with hurt intent, do i care? Hell no i really enjoyed my self and gaguing fro mthe texts back and forth so did she.

I think if some one said " Mate Shes F-ing ugly Cow, Get a life " Yea thats Blatent nasty. But " Does she juice ? " Is imo funny thats light banata as pointed out.

I mean i showed the lads who i went to work with they went on that night out i just didnt post there pics, but they had a joke with me like " Are you coming out the closet? Its superman! " and " Can she bench press you " but all as joke, Every single one said she was cute and what the heck was she doing with a egg head like me! hehe

Maybe i was being taken for a mug and myy kind nature blocked out the real meaning, BUT i dont think so.

I just think its difference in opoions. AND the people in question were having a light hearted banata.

I wasn't aware that people putting pictures up looking for advice were being ridiculed, I don't believe that's acceptable at all. My post was made under the impression that you were getting angry about events solely in the afore-mentioned thread and I'm sorry if I misinterpreted what you meant. However, as far as events in the other thread are concerned, I stand by the jist my initial post that people were generally very fast on slamming any sort of banter there and thin-skinned to a ridiculous extent.

Fintan banter is fine mate, things like "does she juice" is banter, but calling someone else's girl a minger because they dont come under your standard of whats attractive is disrespectful. If any of you did that in the street you would be missing teeth

yes this was the point i was trying to get across, a quick search and you can read many a thread with deogratry comments on pictures that have been displayed, it annoys me that one minority comment and then the sheep join in....

The aforementioned thread, that sha hitherforth be known as Frankengate , was merely the straw that broke the camels back, so to speak.

There has definately been a rise is posts 'bashing' other members. Some may be light hearted, some may have a vein of hostility, the written word is never the easiest to define I guess, but the point remains, it has increased and to new and browsing members of a forum looking at a broad member base, this can be a very off-putting trait for us to allow to continue as it has.

I suspect many posting such comments are more than aware that their comments would not be looked upon favourably by the owners but people do like to try and push the boundries of what the owners wish to allow behind the defense of calling any actions taken as OTT PC.

While we have a good sense of community here where people feel they can act like they might to amongst their 'real' mates, you have to bare in mind that the comments made are there for all to see

So you don`t find it acceptable when someone puts pictures up of themselves and is ridiculed yet you do when a girl who`s done nothing to anyone on this board ( other than have a good laugh with FJ) has pictures put up (without her knowledge) and she is also ridiculed ?

I do partially agree, but I believe that with the internet there are marginally different levels of leniency regarding what is acceptable and what isn't, I mean, you wouldn't talk to strangers in the street about nutritional advice either would you, or come up to them with a random "joke of the day". For one thing, generally speaking you can call your friends girlfriend a minger without getting your teeth knocked out (speaking from my own personal experience, you might have angry friends :P), or you can ask his advice on something as he's your friend. Social barriers like that are removed on the internet, everyone is free to ask anyone anything without fear of being looked at like some sort of cretin, and with that comes banter that you would expect to hear from your friends, regardless of wether they happen to be your friends or not! You cannot police the internet in the same way that you would real life, as it simply isn't the same, sad as that may sound.

At the end of the day I guess it's just each to his own. I'm glad that Frankenjim hasn't taken any offence to anything that was said which I would have thought was the crux of the matter, but if there really is a larger issue going on here I'm going to close my newbie mouth and let you more experienced members sort it out.

I don't believe she was ridiculed. Far too strong a word for the content on the thread, but like I said, Horses for Courses, and I do intend to stay out of this thread now, as there apparently *is* an underlying issue. If you do want to thrash it out, feel free to message me, or whatever mailing system MT uses. Take care.
