But at the expense of common decency mate ?

I don`t think it was too strong Fintan, I`d hazzard a guess if she turned out to be someones Daughter/sister/friend on here many disagreeing on this would have gone off their heads, in the pub with your mates ? yes maybe a different story, but anyway we`ll let it drop and no hard feelings [sm=thumbsup.gif].

drab4 -> RE: Respect (May 8 2008 19:23:32)

Respect is good

I like to joke around here, as in real life, and hope I don't offend anyone. If I ever do then that's seriously not my intention

The thing with the internet is that you pretty much have to give a certain level of respect to strangers. Otherwise the whole internet thing will never work. How can you talk to, or about, people who you have no respect for? That's nigh on impossible

Good post Scruffy

FrankenJim -> RE: Respect (May 8 2008 20:03:56)

(Edit: i meant dirtyvest what did you mean fella aobve post)

dirtyvest -> RE: Respect (May 8 2008 20:08:03)

I didn't mean anything, I don't quite get you.... I comedically referred to your thread as Frankengate as that was the thread everyone was focussing on. And the straw/camel thing was merely highlighting that while your thread wasn't the sole focus of scruffy's points in was the last one in a long line of threads that brought his concerns to the forefront.

No hidden meanings at all, mate [;)]

dazc -> RE: Respect (May 8 2008 20:14:51)

i do think the girl in question was ridiculed, i dont know how anyone can come in here and argue that it was all good humour, most of the women i know would have been most upset to read things like what were posted about her.

It annoyed me, as i posted on that thread.

there is a really bad atmosphere in general at times, that definately didnt exisit 4 or 5 years ago, i think we need to go back to the stricter moderation in general.

there are a good few members that really only post in general, and post ALOT, 99% of which are banter and piss taking, alot of it aimed at others that arent part of this group. these people need to be removed from the board in my opinion, they contribute nothing and ruin alot of threads, and other half decent threads get lost under piles of nonsense.

Not actually a bad post in fairness

Get no arguments from me over less lenient moderation.

Agree with you 100% Scruffy.

ziggy -> RE: Respect (May 8 2008 20:53:42)

Totally agree.. [;)]

we all have respect for certain people and show respect for others ? ..... or so we think.....

We all know times change, i have been posting on this board for nearly seven years (yes i ought to get a life) and still love debating and helping people where i can, along with learning and taking on new ideas....this is what MT has brought to me and this is what i have tried to give back (although not always succesful). many of you will not know me as i read a lot more than i post, mainly in the training forums, but have made some great mates and had a lot of laughs at the various MT meet ups, this to me is what the whole board is about, debating, humour, helping and RESPECTING other members.. i do now believe the latter is disapearing fast..

i popped into general as i was asked by a mate, to be horrified about some of the comments made on a certain guys girl..a page and a half of people calling her a "minger" what sort of respect is this giving to anyone.. we all have different views on people and all see different people in a different way, what right did these people have to comment on her, someone they did not know.. it really saddens me that people can get judged before they get known, if they had nothing worth while to say then why jump on the band wagon and comment in the first place... how would the girl feel if she read those comments, but i suppose the members who made the comments would not be bothered as they would never get to meet her...

how does this sort of thing look to new members, people who want to come on here for help and advice, to get into the best shape they can, with a little help from members, if i was a new member i would certainly be thinking twice, the thought of being rediculed, belittled, how is that gonna effect a persons self esteem and motivation... we all have to start somewhere, we all end up somewhere else, but if someone along the way can give a little time and patience and a push in the right direction then its a start...rather than just sit and rip the pi$$

well this is my rant over, just think before you post and show a little respect, give a little back to MT as we have all benifieted from it in the past...

show some respect

agreed, imo we all here to give advice and help each other, get tips etc.
ive had a few people attack me from my ideas, to what i wear, dress like.
and some off them have been new members that give a f.
ive got friendly with quite a few people and and enjoying the site till someone takes the mik

no need

this as pointed out by others is quite accurate, and IMO is actually what happens

If the mods/owners are aware of this problem then I don't think its unfair to ask what is going to be done about it?

Agree with this mate one of the reasons I don't post as much in General anymore to many people trying to make a name for themselves

mad_cereal_lover -> RE: Respect (May 8 2008 21:28:27)

With regards to the stricter moderation - I think its a point that needs to be made that if you look at the size of MT now compared with several years ago, they are worlds apart. Whenever you get to be big, and in the top50 most visited health and fitness websites above many other respected named websites as MT is, you are going to have more of the less committed people who are just interested in banter and p1ss-taking. Thats a fact of any board that is big, and it is harder to moderate too.

So it comes partly with the territory of being successful as a board and a larger member base, but still moderation is not a set of rules IMO - it takes discretion and is subject to evolution, adapting to the nature of the board which even that changes from one month to the next in the general atmosphere.

However you can never please everyone - a while back we were accused of being too strict in moderating and banning/warnings etc. We relaxed by popular demand, things got worse and then people say moderation needs to be stricter - thus it is a hard balance as you will always get people who say the way you are doing it needs to be changed.

But agreed, good post, unfortunately though respect is not something simply lost just in here these days, but in our country all together in more recent times (damn I sound so old saying that).

understand what your saying MCL, at the time that moderating was changed to being less strict, i posted and said that i nver really thought it had been a problem in too strict, not for me anyway, though i did welcome it at the time, as i hoped it would give us a little more freedom in the subjects that could be discussed.

looking back, and this is only personal opinion, i think it was a good idea and done with the right intentions, but i dont think it worked, and hasnt lead to an improvement of the board.

difficult situation for the owners and mods to be in though.

Titch -> RE: Respect (May 8 2008 21:46:05)

Posting pics of yourself for others to honestly critique is fine. Posting pics of others without their permission is not. Posting pics featuring other people prominently and expecting no one to to mention them is naive.

don marcos -> RE: Respect (May 8 2008 22:53:31)

I dont think stricter moderation is required as i cant say im keen on having more rules applied but do think that the general forum (which is a bit of a playground really) would benefit from quite a large number of posters being asked if they should really be "contributing" to a website called muscletalk.

Noddie -> RE: Respect (May 8 2008 22:59:53)

I've only been here a short time, but I have to say that I have seen 1 or 2 needlessly abusive posts. If you cannot think of something nice to say, has it not crossed your mind to say nothing?

I've always liked the line "Arguing on the internet is like competing in the special olympics. Even when you win, you're still a retard".

Sorry. Forgot to put my "PC" hat on this evening.

That was a needlessly abusive post about retards.
