JBRSS -> Cheque Question? (May 9 2008 0:15:34)

An auntie of mine sent me a cheque for christmas present. I only found it today and was wondering will i still be able to put it in the bank?

JBRSS -> RE: Cheque Question? (May 9 2008 0:16:16)

It was dated 14.12.2007 by the way

You've usually got 6 months to cash it. So get it done soon. Auntie Betty gave you a cheque for £8.50 did she mate? That's what i used to get off my auntie!

Pay it in, it'll be fine. Though tell you Auntie so she doesn't get confused when she sees her statements.

As said it is usually valid for 6 months, you can get around this by paying it in via a paying machine, as more often than not these are just sent off to a central site & processed via automated machines.

PartyBoy -> RE: Cheque Question? (May 9 2008 22:01:07)

As above.

The biggest hurdle (as the payee) for an expired cheque would be your own bank in accepting it over the counter for paying in to your account. You'd think that the biggest hurdle would be the drawer's bank as it is ultimately their decision whether to pay or 'bounce' the cheque "out of date". The reality is that virtually none of the cheques written are ever actually checked to mandate and for technicalities. Over £5k or £10k maybe but below, forget it. You could sign your cheque 'Tw@t' and your bank would still honour and pay it.
