Sign this petition and show your support for the few remaining veterans of the First World War. These men endured unimaginable horrors in the trenches during WWI on behalf of their country. We have honoured them ever since by observing Remembrance Sunday during the Festival of Remembrance.

Quite soon, however, the Last Tommy will pass away and there will no longer be any living survivors of the First World War.

In order to ensure that this moment does not pass without thought from the general public we call for the government to grant a state funeral for the Last Tommy, to be held at Westminster Abbey, so that we may properly honour him and all his fallen comrades.

That's if he decides to accept of course!

Sign our Downing Street e-petition and call on the Prime Minister to grant this state funeral. http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/lasttommyfuneral

Where does it say one is needed? Now I agree I'd like the old codger to have one but this 'lets have a petition where one might not be needed' goes with the Red Arrows and Olympics BS of a few weeks back.

As for your granddad - you could do something and it would be up to you and yours to remember him. Same as with anyone. People can often have this 'and someone should do something' attitude when they themselves can. Local papers love this stuff and its very easy to contact them and get them to take a press release (if well written). So, for example, YOU could today write to them (or call, email etc) and ask them if they will be covering it. It would be ideally run at the time of Remembrance Sunday obviously. The fact that you are from a much younger generation would be a good angle.

Petitions are ok in that people had enough feeling to sign their agreement and give their name but nothing is better than actually doing something yourself. More often than not if you know who to contact and how to get them 'onside' you can do so much. Local councilors, MP's and so on are also useful.

Looks like they beat you to it.

An excellent point made by Mobster. That would be FAR better way of building up support for the cause. Personally I think petitions are a bit of an idle solution, and I'm not sure that they are at all effective anyway. You need the media on your side really getting the message home, not X amount of signatures.

Apparently there's six British Veterans left, although two didn't see service. One female veteran as well.

Signed!

Although in my experience petitions although showing peoples support for somthing dont actually make any difference.

But at least we are showing support for somthing important. The heroes should always be remembered.

Once again - gate shut but horse already bolted. This will be one of those awful chain emails or texts. I did sign it but the power of the media is there for all of us to 'abuse' if we know how. Take the strongman competitions and charity work we've involved ourselves in here - been in the paper loads and I even did a radio interview live on air 2x for the last one.
