Ok here's my problem.....

I've started a new job recently 30 miles away, plus I have a 4 month old baby. So this means it makes most sense to train first thing on a morning before work, at the gym near work.

I've been doing this for 2 months and things are going well. But I need to fit some cardio in now as I'm starting to cut.

I can't do any on a night, as I don't get home til 6.30pm, bath the little boy, eat, sort food out for the next day etc... I think I sit down with the missus at 9.30pm and we go to bed at 10pm!!!

So I have 2 potential windows for cardio. I can spare 15 - 20 mins on a morning to stick some on the end of my weights session, or I can go back to the gym in my dinner hour and do potentially 30 mins of some kind of cardio.

I've already been advised against doing HIIT straight after weights as some people say this will be too catabolic. The guys (in the diet section) recomended I do 20 mins SSCV every morning after weights. But I don't feel this will be enough.

Should I go back at lunch time and do some HIIT for 20 mins??? I just don't feel like the 20 mins SSCV on a morning will do much.

It would work much better if I could do my weights at lunch time and do 45 mins fasted SSCV on a morning, which is what I used to do, but I can't always get out at lunchtime and I don't want to risk missing a weights session.

Sorry for the long post, but whats anyone think?

Could you not fit any in of a weekend. If I was you i would do the following:-

Monday - Weights & 20 mins Cardio
Tuesday - 45 mins Cardio
Wednesday - Weights & 20 mins Cardio
Thursday - 45 mins Cardio
Friday - Weights & 20 mins Cardio
Saturday - 45 mins Cardio
Sunday - 45 mins Cardio

This gives you 4 hours of cardio which is easily enough for a cut.

I would start off with just the 20 mins after the weight session and maybe one day per weekend and look to increase it when the fat loss slows down.

Good luck as I have a 16 month old daughter and a busy job and know how hard it is to fit things in.

There's no way I can do anything on a weekend mate. It's officially "take over babysitting time" for me. He's a handfull and she needs a break, which I don't mind.

Also, I do a 5 day split which I really enjoy and find most producive. It's hard going doing weights at 7am, but if I'm only doing 3 or 4 exercises on one muscle group, it's much easier to make the most of my energy. So that means there's no "cardio only" days.

Hope this doesn't come accross rude.
But the only way to fit it in is to make time, i.e get up half hour early or go to bed half hour later.
Or buy a exercise bike and do it whilst your baby sitting or try skipping in the house for 20 minutes, maybe burpess.
Do some HIIT late at night, sprint outside your house for 10 minutes.

Fair enough mate - no problem

Weekend wise if there is no way to fit cardio in - how about getting the little fella in his pram and taking him for a walk, you get the baby out of your missus hair so she can chill out, do the washing etc and you get some steady state cardio in.

Also training wise you could get back to basics and cut your workouts down but that your call and if your enjoying your training then I would stick to it.

If you can only fit so much cardio in then you have to appreciate that cutting will take longer than with plenty of cardio.

Not rude at all mate.

I get up at 5.30am so I can train on a morning. I'm up during the night with the baby too, so if I don't go to bed at 10pm I might aswell write the next day off. I'm 2 months into a new job as an IT manager trying to make an impression so I need my wits about me. Plus I'm on the road for 2 hours a day, so I'm pretty tired at the minute!!

I have an exercise bike, but the little one is at the stage where he doesn't sleep much at all during the day and wants my attention pretty much all the time.

I get what your saying, but isn't my dinner hour idea a way of making time and fitting it in?

I'm just asking for peoples opinion on weights and some SSCV on a morning, then more cardio at lunchtime. And whether it should be more SSCV or some HIIT.

If I go at lunch time, thats 50 mins a day for 5 days. Or will it not be as effective with it being split into 2 sessions? Thats why I'm wondering if HIIT would be better at lunchtime as the the SSCV would be fueled so I'd be buring glucose for the first 20 mins?

With your lifestyle at home and the amount of training you already do I would stay clear of HIIT as you will just fry yourself.

Id just go with weights, diet change and introduce as little cardio as possible to get you losing 1-2ib a week. When progress slows just try to introduce more cardio when you can.

Its not the end of the world if it takes you a bit longer to get where you want to be.

Could you continue doing your wieghts in the morning but bring your exercise bike to work? So you can do HIIT or steady state in for 30 mins and still have time to eat your lunch without having to travel to the gym.

The gym is literally 2 - 3 mins away in the car. I can do 30 mins, get a shower and get back to work. I'd make my lunch a liquid one so I can just neck it in the car or back at my desk.

If your gym is that close then there is your answer.

I'd keep the sessions separate, weights in the morning, cardio lunchtime; you can mix up the cardio sessions between steady state and HIIT to keep it interesting.


Its probably worth remembering that it isn't necessary to do cardio to cut [;)] so, hypothetically, my friend who is quite busy sometimes doesn't do very much cardio but has still lost two stone in four months [:)]

I suppose it isn't necessary but I've successfully cut in the past by doing quite a lot of cardio and mentally it just feels wrong.... trying to cut without cardio. Feels like I'm not putting any effort in!!!

Im currently contest dieting and manage 2 hours cardio a day plus weights and I have a 6 month old baby in the house. I'm not 30 miles from work (15 miles) but if your getting in at 18.30pm whats from stopping you going to the gym and doing cardio there before you head home?

If you want it enough you will make time.

I want it.... yes.... but I won't sacrifice spending time with my son. I bath him at 7pm then it's feed and bed, so if I set off home any later I don't get to see him at all.

I think I'm making the most of my time away from home, by training in the morning and trying to fit some in at lunch time.
