what are the advantages of doing these?
what do they do?
would you recomend doing these on every set?

1) they help you carry on when you have reached failure with a weight

2) selecting a lighter weight after reaching failure with what your currently handling will allow you 1-3 reps more depending on the difference/weight drop.

3) hell no... i save these to the last set on the last exercise of the muscle group being trained... it taxes the CNS alot training to this type of failure.
Throw them in every now and again, once twice a month IMO

you can drop the weight before failure so less taxing.

eg pick up a weight you can do 10 reps with. But rack the weight at 7 -9 reps. the decrease the weight for a few more reps to increase the tension time.

I often do lighter sets if I've been doing heavy sets so that I can get a bit of technique back and get a bit more total work done as well, not just a few reps and done.
