Icemansoldier -> Football training? (May 9 2008 12:41:20)

Am quite unfit atm for a lad my age (19) i will prob join my village team in Aug, and i wanna head start on fitness as most of them drink every weekend etc but are decent footy players lol.

I was thinking HIT would be good maybe once a week then ive thought of a custom made treadmill routine i would prob do the below routine for 10-20 mins 2-3 times a week, im quite unfit so i dont wanna go too hard until i get into it:

15 sec walk
30 sec jog
15 sprint

SS cardio isnt as good as HIT or the custom routine imo for footy,what do you's think?

DarloDan -> RE: Football training? (May 12 2008 12:27:50)

what i do is go to my local football pitch and use half of the pitch as a square as follows:

start from any of the corners you like, first i walk from corner 1 to corner 2 then a slow jog from corners 2 -3 faster jog from corners 3-4 and an all out sprint from corners 4 back to 1

hope this helps

jaybrown -> RE: Football training? (May 12 2008 17:22:38)

I don't think HIIT is the way to go if you are unfit. I think you won't be able to keep the level of intensity required to get the results you want. I would suggest SS until you fitness levels improve and then start HIIT.

JBRSS -> RE: Football training? (May 12 2008 17:52:36)

HIIT is really tough mate, so as stated above just do normal cardio

Yeah i prefer to do my cardio at the gym, but there is a footy pitch beside it anyway so i could do treadmill and the walk, jog, sprint, how many times a week mate? I aint got no footy prac until august so i can get a head start now.

My steady state (aerobic) would be better than my anaerobic systems atm, maybe do 1 SS, 1 footy pitch session and 1 treadmill session a week, then ill drop the aerobic after a while, i feel the Darlodans way is very good as it will develop the aerobic and anerobic systems at the 1 session.

Thanks for the ideas, appreciated [sm=thumbsup.gif]

Yeah ive tried hit on treadmill before its deadly and ive also tried the footy pitch idea from darlodan it is very good for all round fitness imo

jaybrown -> RE: Football training? (May 13 2008 11:18:30)

I totally agree that HIIT is a great form of cardio providing your fit enough (and only you know how fit you are).

DarloDan -> RE: Football training? (May 16 2008 8:41:31)

Icemansoldier: i would say twice a week for you mate, i am not currently doing it yet as i am bulking for pre season keeping my cardio down to one 5 aside session each week and then start to add the hiit routine closer to the season

tashmed -> RE: Football training? (May 16 2008 12:13:56)

Got to mix it up here boys. You shouldn't be doing one or the other I would do one day as SS and another as HIIT, maybe even add in some SAQ drills too. If you're serious about getting to your best for next season and haven't played competitively for a while then do both.

Our players (not me I'm a keeper!) will usually doing something like Tues - SS, Thurs - HIIT, Sun - SAQ based stuff with and without a ball during pre-season.

Well i dont like doing cardio at home but i may have to as i go to the gym 3 times a week (which there if a footy pitch beside it) and i train legs on one day so cardio after that session on legs would be a killer, so i can do cardio 2 times a week atm, i may add a steady state session in at home, i suppose that could be done then the other 2 days at gym i may do treadmill work and a session of footy pitch work.

Bigtime -> RE: Football training? (May 17 2008 21:49:22)

Why not ask Drewsky who is a moderator on here as he trains people for specific sports.

I would also work on correct running technique and fast footwork.

Maybe join an athletics club in the summer months.

cheers for the tip mate ill drop him an email[8D] do you mean running with a ball, footwork with a ball or without a ball or both?

Bigtime -> RE: Football training? (May 21 2008 16:48:05)

I would do both personally.

Mix it up.

Prob next month i will be training a couple of times per week on my own. Get some ladders, hurdles, cones, spiked slalam poles and your set. Oh and a set of maybe 5 - 10 balls.

I know its may be sad but if you want to be ahead of everyone else you have to put the effort in.

What did Drew say?

yeah your right mate, tbh my team is a pack of unfit men, a few overweight, most would eat crap and drink every weekend lol you say it shouldnt be hard to get ahead of these people but there fitness seems ok, mines is ****, so i got like a 2/3 month head start so should be all good.

I emailed drew he didnt respond lol

Bigtime -> RE: Football training? (May 21 2008 23:26:45)

Drew also has a journal going so maybe tell him to check his junk folder? Worth a try.

I know what you mean about overweight men. Been to see a few of my mates play local and it can get annoying and im on the side line.

If you need any equipment i listed above you can get them mega cheap over the net or ask a local club.
