Selecta -> I like the Smith Machine! (please dont shout at me!) (May 9 2008 13:19:49)

My training has been up and down but i am making a concerted effort to get my act together. I am a tall lanky fella and although my back and leg days seem successful and the weight progresses i have always struggled with chest day. i had a session with the PT at my gym the other day and he got me on the smith machine to do my flat and incline pressing (previously i used normal bench and then inc d'bell press)

I dont know whether it is a case of finding it easier to concentrate on hitting the chest directly or less shoulders being used as not having to stabilise the free weights but i had chest and tricep doms like u couldnt believe. If i even poked my pecs they felt like they were bruised.

I think for the time being i will stick with the smith and see how it goes. DOes anyone here actively use them for their chest day?

I'm a convert... I use it for incline bench and shoulder press

Nothing to be ashamed of in my opinion. If you're happy with the progress you're making with the smith, that's all that matters.

True! It just seems that everyone on this forum is anti-smith!! I will continue with it a while and see how it goes !

I actually prefer the Smith Machine for decline pressing and Shrugging.

Hate it for legs and incline/shoulder pressing.

Gets a bad rap but certainly better than nothing.

if i wanna go heavy it just gives me a little confidence as i train alone and don't have a spotter

I alternate 8 weeks free bench, then rotate to smith, not a crime my freind!!! If it works
do it[;)]

i usually do squats on the smith as i feel uneasy lifting alot of weight with the squat rack. i.e. if i squat down, what if i cant rise back up?

why shrugs?

just something i thought i would say to you as i remember you saying about your traps. i find if i have my hands further apart on the bar with BB shrugs i hit a different part of the muscle. less movement though.

MMA Guy -> RE: I like the Smith Machine! (please dont shout at me!) (May 12 2008 9:03:39)

i use the smith for incline bench... i just dont like free weight bench as much

free weight bench is worse for the shoulders when you reach behind your head to unrack the barbell also.

DisposableHero -> RE: I like the Smith Machine! (please dont shout at me!) (May 12 2008 15:11:59)

I use it for shrugs as the dumbbells at my **** gym only go up to 100. It is useful for some things. Don't listen to the haters!

MRJD -> RE: I like the Smith Machine! (please dont shout at me!) (May 12 2008 23:29:50)

I lost alot of strength due to being out of the gym and ill for about 3 months and now use the smith for most exercises, I also train alone so the added safety is there. Last week while squatting on my final set i couldn't push up on the last rep from deep position so i just racked it on easily which obviously saved embarassment if I hadn't have been on it. If it works it works, I'm working towards my goals not for someone elses approval in how I train.

used the smith last night after using free weight bench for 3 weeks... it was a warm welcome [:)]
