johnf -> Motivation (May 9 2008 16:49:00)

Any suggestions on how to motivate my mind to not drink for the next month and train hard. I like a drink every weekend but I'm not progressing any, I feel good, strong and energetic by the end of a week at the gym then I go out at weekend and drink and don't get enough sleep or regular meals. It takes me days to get back to normal, by this time I just repeat the cycle. I'm currently on a break with my girlfriend so want to do something constructive.

A guy at the gym tells me "When you're ready to make the gym your priority then you will" which sounds like wise words. I know that I can get into really good shape if I sacrifice going out drinking. I would never go out and not drink that wouldn't be an option..

This weekend I'm going to watch the fit show and read bodybuilding magazines, dvd's etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions

why cant you go out and not drink?

johnf -> RE: Motivation (May 9 2008 16:55:44)

I would love to be able to go out and not drink but everyone pesters you ALL night. to "have a drink" It gets very tedious and annoying and you very rarely have a good night. I'm 28 now and need to teach myself discipline. I've made it too easy for myself up until now. Sometimes you just need to take a step back and have a look at yourself.

maybe you need better friends who will respect your freedom to do as you please [:)]

Order a double single malt and then tip it on the floor, you won't get asked again[:)]

Ha Ha, I would love to see their face! But being Scottish that would be a crime. I don't really want to go out, just need tips on keeping my mind focused on training hard with no distraction. I'm sure MT members have been in the same boat.

TheFuture -> RE: Motivation (May 9 2008 17:49:17)

if you want to train hard you will, if you want to achieve your goals you will, if you want to go out you will, and if YOU want to drink YOU will....only you will decide mate

Two songs that rip me out of my seat and dump me onto the roads, regardless of weather conditions:

Turn up the volume, listen to what they have to say, it's all applicable to any part of your life.

You're absolutely right. Just need to show myself who's in charge...

Furyan -> RE: Motivation (May 9 2008 18:02:44)

I have a night out once a week, it usually amounts to excessive alcohol intake. It wont effect you gains if for the rest of the time, you give your training and diet 100%. Take it from me, dont let bodybuilding run your life, its far too short. Enjoy yourself and enjoy your training, going out once a week will not matter unless you wish to reach competition standards of bodybuilding.

It sounds like all you need to do, is cut down on how much alcohol you consume on the night out. You obviously drink far more than you can handle, as it takes you days to start eating properly again. Cut it down a little, drink water in between drinks. You wil recover faster and it wont effect your weightlifting as much. Simple solution mate.

strikalite -> RE: Motivation (May 9 2008 18:38:56)

Yeah totally agree with Furyan, go out but you don't have to go crazy, if I go out i tend to meet the guys up town slightly later or if i go with them then taper the drinking off...I still have a good time on 3-4 drinks(lightweight lol[:D])

Mashburn -> RE: Motivation (May 9 2008 18:39:55)

For motivation see this thread

#Hench -> RE: Motivation (May 9 2008 19:01:04)

dont go out then.

i didnt for 6 weeks amazing how clear your head gets when you are not drinking/abusing drugs every weekend.

once you brreak the cycle you dont even want to.

not to mention the gains i made from training eating and sleeping better.

you probally arnt missing the drink you are more scared of missing something. if you know what i mean.

Good post Furyan - something i need to continue to remind myself.

Also when i go out i drink large amounts of water before and after and eat whilst im out - i dont miss meals. Seems to stop hangovers.
