Today i was having a discussion with my brother i've been taking protein shakes for around 3 months. (bulking stage)
his argument was that that much can have a bad affect on my liver combined with ofc chicken etc currently say im taknig in around say 170g of the stuff and i my weight is 12st 5lb

how much truth is there to this?

As the bowl of petunias said as it fell towards the surface of the planet Magrathea "Oh, no. Not again!" [:D]

EDIT: But seriously, at your current weight of 173lbs, 260g/day of protein is perfectly safe for you.

Loads of people harp on about protein causing kidney damage. You would have to eat a hell of a lot more than your current intake to cause any real damage (assuming you don't suffer with any existing nephropathy).

I performed a lit. review for The Anabolic Index and was surprised to discover that more than 10% of people may have an asymptomatic renal dysfunction. In other words, high protein intake may ultimately be harmful to a small minority of people, but it doesn't seem as though we definitively know what the consequences might be.

I am absolutely NOT perpetuating the myth that high protein intake is universally harmful.

What parameters were looked at for renal dysfunction?
