I wish to high heaven some of them would Ditto. I have to have a can on the counter in the summer with a sign next to it saying: "Hard Day? Have a squirt then, it's free."

ORIGINAL: Northern Rocker reg. the top off thing. We don't have nerds popping off their tops to train. But quite often someone will strip down to their trunks and practise posing, often with gym owner giving advice etc. The females there seem to love it tbh. Maybe it's a German thing. We have a separate posing room with a wee mirror and spot lights. Stripped off blokes make women leave. Stripped off fat blokes make women heave then leave.

ORIGINAL: Dr Zoidberg BTW Righty , your name came up in conversation today with Dean (monkey) from CFM , he speaks very highly of you , and passes on his regards ! Only cos he's sh1t scared of me cos I told him I'd trample his face if he didn't make 250 sales on the last promotion. He made 236, then legged it. In all seriousness, he's very very good at his job. LOL ! We are having a similar scenario at the moment , 400 is the magic number - on 350 with a week to go ! he reckons he'll smash it , we are not so sure - But realistically , even 350 is more than we were expecting on a 3rd promotion - so its all good He is a frighteningly good salesman though - I had someone in the other day who I had down as a total timewaster - she kept telling me she did not want to join the gym , but just wanted some advice !! , I humoured her for far longer than I normally would have done , and then passed her over to Dean .... Who sold her 3 years PIF !!! I couldn't beleive it ! He said to tell you you're a miserable sod

Righty When you induct them, could you not just give them some pointers on proper technique, tell them roughly how many reps and sets they should be doing etc? I have never seen an induction in which this information was provided, but surely if you did that (as well as maybe inform them about diet etc) then it may prevent people doing ridiculous numbers of sets with bad technique. You're a big guy and they probably want to get big too, so if you tell them the importance of training their whole body, not just there biceps, you may be able to save yourself a lot of mental anguish. Plus you won't have to come on here and complain to us about it!

Problem is , If you try your hardest to communicate the basics of training , recovery , nutrition etc to 100 people , best case scenario is that 5 of those people will actually take any notice of what you have just told them , and stick to it with any kind of regularity - the majority of inductees will appear to take it in , then wander over to the dumbell rack and spend the rest of their 3 week training career there (apart from the 5 minutes when they wander up to the counter to ask why they are not Mr Olympia yet Of course , in an Ideal world , we'd give that info to everyone , give them the benefit of the doubt and let those 5 emerge and excel , but it is difficult to spend an hour explaining this stuff to people that you know are going to ignore you for the large part Obviously I can't speak for Rightyho , but our inductions tend to be very basic - IF, after 6 weeks or so , these lads are still coming in , and have taken on board the limited info we gave them initially - Then nothing gives me greater pleasure than sharing the "decent" info with them !

OK mate. Completely understand. Just out of interest, do you ever praise or congratulate younger members of your gym if they are using very good technique, improving consistently, appear to be very dedicated etc? I was just wondering, as, like you say, you could wait 4 weeks and tell the remaining guys that they're doing it wrong and how to do it correctly, but the really committed guys may have already been researching it so as to make the best improvements, and I believe that these people deserve respect for doing so.

Yeah , don't get me wrong , we do show everyone correctly to begin with , but selective hearing/ memory seems to kick in with the majority and they all seem to have "better ideas" of what they should be doing A lot of the time you hsve to hear it to beleive it !! - even from some experienced trainers , for example - You will try to correct someones form , or suggest better choices of exercise selection , and each time you'll get a "yes, but" type of answer , I had a conversation along these lines with a guy training back a couple of weeks ago, he insisted that he "had" to use his sloppy form as it "worked better for him" (<< remember that bit !) - I suggested some other exercises but he sort of shrugged his shoulders and carried on Then , a few minutes later he was telling me that his back "just wouldn't grow , no matter what he tried" What can you do ?

Have to agree with Dr Z - inductees often don't even bother trying to take the info in - they wander from machine to machine trying things under supervision (and being shown correct form), then promptly forget everything. Yes, there is a lot of info to take in - I liken it to having 10 driving lessons at once - but they often don't help themselves at all. Our inductions are quite thorough - probably 45 minutes - covering machines and cardio with an introduction to freeweights. I also provide an 8 page crib sheet with diagrams and basic dos and don'ts. That said, 95 per cent ignore the advice, ignore the programmes and end up doing a little cardio, then biceps every session (lads) or leg and bum exercises (ladies). The few that do get into it, are vaguely polite, and do want to make a go of the gym then get our focused attention from that moment on. They are a minority, though.

Saw the funniest thing ever last week. I was at the gym and these 2 chavs came in. They stood in front of the mirror with a dumbell in each hand then started curling like mad. After about 20 reps they both together rolled their sleeves up and did a double bicep pose next to each other and started comparing to see who had the biggest bi's. Needless to say they had about 12" arms max (as most chavs do). They then started arguing over who's were bigger (in a non serious way) and started grabbing each others arm to compare. I nearly pi**ed myself laughing.
