I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but i'm pretty sure the price of chicken breast has rocketed (used to be a pack for 4 quid; now it's about 7 or 8). Being a poor student, I was wondering if there is any other part of the chicken which is comparable in terms of nutrition? I usually go for thighs, as they are much cheaper and still meaty. Cheers.

Eggs are one of the most expensive protein sources, around £2 for 1kg of eggs, pretty much same as chicken with more fat from the yolks if you include them. Cool will have to check iceland, is it precooked then or is it in frozen chunks or what? Any bone or skin? Can you type up nutritional info please if u get time mate Frankenjim - Try Tesco "whole food soya mince", tastes better than H&B and its slightly cheaper too. I just had it for breakfast with milk and some jam, its nice

Ah ive found tesco to taste the best, kind of like cous cous but when you add sweet milk it tastes great. Throwing it in boiling water then draining often removes the chewyness too, if thats the problem (although it will become a bit sloppy!). So you just reheat(defrost) the chicken effectively, assume its all meat not skin/bone/cartiglidge etc? Thats pretty dam good if so! Yeah i think ive seen their "lean mince" its packed with fat though so i eat turkey mine at around £3/KG for 144kcals. Although when i bulk i may swap to mince, not sure. Nice one mate!

hey this may sound a bit daft but.... i bought some chicken breast from tesco (usually get em elsewhere) and it had the nutritional info on the back. however the nutrition info for 100g differed from the nutritional info per 100g COOKED. im slightly confused if you simply grill the chicken how can its nutritional content differ?

The weight of the breast will change when it is coooked, Water will drop off. Nutritional value remains the same, it is just ligther when cooked. The Tesco frozen breasts contain added salt and dextrose for flavour which is a shame. I boil mine to try and offset this...

oh right i tend to weigh my chicken pre cooked so as an example if the pack said 110kcals per 100g and i weighed 200g out obviously the value would be 220cals? i wouldnt have to factor in cooked weight or anything?

100G of chicken is around 20g of protein i believe. I measure mine by cooked weight. Better to have more protein than a lack of protein I say.

If it says 220kcal per 100g raw, then weight 100g raw and cook/eat it. if it says 100g cooked, then get your chicken ammount and cook it, then you must weight it. Raw chicken is lower in protein per 100g, than cooked chicken. Raw chicken has a % of water, which is then lost during cooking. You may find that you need to cook extra chicken to get to the 100g cooked figures as the weight loss can be significant. Personally i weight it raw, different cooking methods will lead to different weights and it can be very misleading when your calorie counting using cooked figures. So if frank is right about icelands chicken being COOKED, it means we're getting over 1KG of chicken which is an amazing deal (hence why im suprised). Raw 1KG of chicken would normally be £6, and you may los 20% of its weight when cooked ending up with 800g effectively. So here if its cooked we may be getitngh the eqivilent of 1200.. or more of chicken! Awesome, for 3.50!
