Buy a Nikon D40 <<< I love mine, though that will set you back £300 and you'll have no budget left for a video camera... though to be fair we've seen more than enough of what you like to photograph

Nah mate, I 've never looked into it with DSLRs but it could be a possibility as a lot of them are starting to get live-view which is when I get on my high horse and be all elitist and say what's the point? In fairness it's not really a party style holiday camera and something like a Canon Ixus will probably do everything you need and more, I had one before making the transition to DSLR and it was great

To add, instead of getting a video camera use the function on your Ixus that I just recommended lol and buy a decent (or couple of) decent sized memory cards and a spare battery

Video: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130930 - Too Cheap ? The problem with camcorders like that is the storage medium - you'll have to buy zillions of SD cards. Alternatively the footage may be so hideously compressed as to be awful. It's also got digital zoom rather than optical. Digital zoom is unusable. The other thing you might want to resist is camcorders that make a thing about how light they are. This is NOT a good thing as it makes it nigh on impossible to keep the camera still while filming.

easily within budget , £100ish would get a good quality 7-8mp camera , then spend £150-£200 on a miniDV camcorder, i know minidv is considered dated now but they are just as small and light as a £400-600 dvd camcorder and the picture quality is stunning almost dvd like.

You might be able to get a bargain second hand, although there's obviously an element of risk there. MiniDV is far superior to DVD camcorders, although the latter have benefited from recent improvements in compression algorithms. I still film a lot of MiniDV footage for work.
