BIGDOWNUNDER -> Going the home gym route? (May 10 2008 5:27:33)

As of late I've been training at lunch times at Fitness First 2mins from work and all is well!
But as work gets busy in the fourth quarter of the year this arangement might not work out. So I'm thinking of buying the full gym set up for the garage-Cage,lat pulldown attachment,Dumbbells olympic weights. This would allow me to train when the kids are in bed or when ever I fancy so I would love some feedback from those who train at home? and I'm not talking the dodgy weights bench from argos I'm seriously going to spend a few grand.(with the Mrs approval)
Cheers[:)]

Do you train on your own at the gym or do you have training partners?

I personally think that the process of going to the gym gets you in mind to do a good work out, no point wasting your time when you have made the effort to go.

I can see the advantages of training from home but for me it would only be if the gym was not a feasible option.

I train at home and MUCH prefer it to the gym. I just have olympic weights, a adjustable bench, a cage and a set of oly dumbells. Does me. If you have a goal motivation won't be a problem 99% of the time. Plus its right there!!

Each to their own. I've done both. Trained at two different gyms but now I have a rack, oly weights, oly d/bell handles, oly ez bar etc and would never go back to a gym for longer than a one off session.

Pros for me are.

After the initial setup cost every sesh is free
I can train at awkward times (having a young family sometimes requires this)
I don't get stuck talking to people I don't want to
My gym is a meter from my house
I can play the Cheeky girls (if I want to)

I train 3 times a week, miss a few round xmas and sometimes miss the odd one when ill but it was very hit and miss when I had to pack my bag, jump in the car and travel to the gym, especially in the winter

BIGDOWNUNDER -> RE: Going the home gym route? (May 10 2008 9:38:28)

I train on my own-never struggled for motivation-If i trained at home my wife would spot me if need be-so thats a plus-she trained with me for 18mnths so it would probably motivate her to start training again

jango -> RE: Going the home gym route? (May 10 2008 9:49:03)

I train at a gym, but I can't always get there. So I have a home set-up as well, and I wouldn't be without it now.

I love being able to to finish a workout and walk straight into the kitchen, where my food has been in the oven for the last half hour and I can eat it straight away.

I also love the solitude of training alone, for me it really helps to focus the mind.

I have a Full rack, Olympic barbell set, Dumbell set and a decent bench. With this lot my home workouts want for nothing.

RichardHead -> RE: Going the home gym route? (May 10 2008 9:51:10)

I've considered this too, do you think you could stick a cage etc in an upstairs flat or would there be the possibility of going through the floor?

All of which I've peed on when you've been asleep.

The constant repetative bounce that lifting would create on the joists underfoot would start cracking the plaster on the ceiling below as they moved under the weight. I doubt very much they'd snap unless you're shifting massive weight but it'd deffo cause some cracking below

I am upstairs and it's OK so far. Although you really can't go too heavy when doing deads. I save deads for the GYM, but rack pulls are a reasonable alternative when training at home.

I went the home gym route last month. I bought a large log cabin (5mx6m) and filled it with a cage, smith machine, high/low pulley, dipping station, bench, cross trainer and 300kg of Oly weights. Buying dumbells next month. I have a tv setup for passing time on the cross trainer (I hate cardio) and have my cd player set up with music I like. I can train how I want, when I want. Though I do miss some of the guys from my old gym, I'd been there years and got to know a lot of them well.

JohnOvManchester -> RE: Going the home gym route? (May 10 2008 10:14:47)

I go to the gym but have a basic rack and bar, oly plates at home...
I find it easier to get in the car get away from the house, the gym is the place only for training, when I'm in the house it's not mentally the same and this reflects in my training.
At home I do OK but not the same.

It's the at the gym it is the time and the place 100% at home it's sort of the time and sort of the place, just doesn't feel the same.
In the same way home study courses are not the same as going to college.

Do you have many brazilians where you are?

By the way, what's that place called where you live? I have a mate who's moving to OZ and it sounded similar.

powerpusher -> RE: Going the home gym route? (May 10 2008 10:51:04)
