looks ideal for your purpose mate, good price too.
personnaly though i dont rate mechanical disks one bit, much better off with good pair of V brakes.

Discs are more complicated, generally need more fiddling with. V brakes don't have the same stopping power.
Mechanical discs are a bit pants, go for hydraulic ones if you can afford it.

well i thought t he same last year so i purchased a '07 GT avanlanche 3.0 its very good ..with V brakes it was 265 unlike its disc equivalent which was 300 and it is very good..but it has the same forks as that mongoose and i recommend trying to get a bike with a suspension lockout so you can flick a little switcgh locking the suspension..you get used to it but going uphill even at the tightest the forks take a tiny amount of power out of the pedals,where as with a lockout you would have maximum efficiency

Not too bad a bike for the money. May be a little heavy, but will take a little bit of abuse on/off road. If you find bits wear out you can only upgrade them to something better. Cable discs are ok (especially in wet weather), but hydraulic discs are a whole new level if you can stretch to them.
See if you can pick up a 2007 bike up cheap. Be very similar specs to 2008 bikes, but you'll get more for your money :)

I'd suggest a Team Saracen bike.
I'm not a fan of hardtails anymore and have gone the full dual suspension way.
Saracen Havoc comes in pretty cheap and does a good all-round job.
Have a look at these hardtails..

I usually say that peopel should stay away from full sus unde a grand, but this is good for the cash, provided you are a small/med

you'l get alot more bang for your buck if you go for a carrera bike,
full sus banshee x - £700, marzocchi forks - think its a marzocchi rear shock.
aurega comp hydraulics.
there is a new carrera banshee XXX comin out priced at £999 should be in most stores soon

Either that or one of the new boardmans (hard tail)
I work for halfords unfortunetley :(

hey its a good bike for the money..only bad things i see are the brass nipples for the spokes and the brakes dont seem up to much easily upgraded though..but u'd need new trigger shifters for the gears because with their design they are incorporated into one unit with the brakes..my mate had a trek mountain bike paid less than £300 and had less breakdowns than my expensive cannondale..mind you he rides like a **** hehe..

What are you going to be using the bike for? Off-road, or road or both?
Do you really need the front suspension? I've got v-brakes on my bike and they've got excellent stopping power afaic
