Yes, that's a real problem, especially for me now that I have to travel up from the Kent coast. It takes a long enough time as it is without having lengthy tube journeys. I haven't been to the Apollo for many years - is it still seating-only? The Academy is obviously out of a smaller band's league.
Aye, the tube is a pain in the arse at the best of times. The last thing you want after a train journey. I was at the Apollo in Januray for Henry Rollins' spoken word tour. There is large standing area now, yes.
Have you been to the electric ballroom in Camden mate? Around 1200 capacity, however, it is a pain the arse to see the stage when it's packed out. That's the only other venue I can think of though TBH.

Yeah, although not for a while. I don't think that there's many places I have been been over the years. There's also the Shepherd's Bush Empire (2000 capacity) but again not the easiest to get to.

I think, unfortunately, which ever way you look at it, getting to see live music in London is always going to be an expensive and somewhat stressful undertaking. You just have to hope that the band will be so good that it makes the trip all worth it!.

yeah i agree though i think it was getting late the last time i heard that one, i have not worked a venue with a washey wash man for a bit (or whatever the fcuk theyre called)

Is that really all it holds? I saw Iron Maiden there in 2001 (IIRC), seemed like it was much bigger
I quite like the Underworld in Camden. It's dark, cramped, hot, there are weird pillars in the way, the sound is a bit dodgy unless you happen to be standing in precisely the right place (usually near where the sound man is!); but I've got a real soft spot for the place
I don't remember them having a special toilet man though

Yeah, the Britannia is still putting on bands. I haven't been there for a long time though. The stuff they put on isn't really my thing to be honest - I'm not keen on pub rock and cover bands. There's only so many bad versions of 'Black Betty' one should be subjected to in a lifetime It's quite nice to sit in their beer garden in a sultry summer evening though
The Tap'n'Tin up in Chatham is a pretty good venue, been to quite a few shows there. But I can't see it being easy to get to from Hythe. Not much going on in Thanet music-wise at the moment. There was quite a bit happening a few years ago but it seems to have dried up now

Descended into pub rock only did it? I seem to remember the pub being not bad at all for original stuff, local bands etc. I think it might be ten years since I was last there.

Now I don't know what mental image this conjures up for you, but I had visions of some debauched free-jazz-funk odyssey going on all night, with people wandering on and off the stage to join in at will with incredibly arcane instruments that they'd brought with them
The reality however: pedestrian covers of 'Black Betty' by bands called things like 'Cupid Stunts' and 'Baker's Dozen'. Excruciating
Did you ever go in the Ship Inn across the street? Saw some quite interesting bands there back in the day. It's a car park now though

Probably - I had a friend that lived in Ramsgate who knew lots of people in Margate, so used to venture over there very often. I can remember some very funny times!
