How important is pushing yourself to do those last few reps? - 11 May 2008 00:00
I have noticed recently that I stop too early. I work out really hard and most of the time to failure but I feel like maybe it isn't failure. I think my mind thinks it is but I could really pump out a couple more reps and when I focus I usually can but its painful. Anyone have any comments on this? Is this crucial in gaining weight or would I burn myself out if I absolutely maxed out every set?

no people had good gains, some amazing without going to failure, me personaly i try to go to failure on every set. if you are make sure you get enough rest inbetween workouts and eat right, (which you should know and do with every type of training)

The last 2 reps are the most important IMO. The other reps just take you up the that point, then the last rep to failure is sometimes called the "Growth Rep". This is because it puts the most amount of stress on your muscles.

If you're not pushing yourself, you are restricting your progress.

I'm constantly striving for an extra kilo, or an extra rep.

I always say the ones that hurt are the ones that work. If you feel you can go for a couple more reps then try it with a spotter that you trust, and if it turns out you cant go for anymore then you'll have someone to help you out nd you wont be stuck with a bar across your chest or neck lol

yeah i agree, although i never used to train to failure and i made brilliant gains now i try rto go to failure every set if not i have to fail on last 2 sets as i go to failure because im pre exhausted then when im failed i wait 2 mins and do about 5 more reps full of pain, burns the next morning haha!!

I think the last reps on the last set are the ones that make the difference.

When i train on my own i have a tendancy to stop early (Wuss out). Which is why i like training with others, as they can shout at me and get those extra reps out!

The more to failure you go the more muscle fibres the body has to use which leads to better growth

personally I grow better going to failure... I make sure I do on every final set per exercise

A muscle that's weak in isolation will be weak in integration.

not true you only need to lift 80% of your rm to engage all fibres, once they are all engaged pushing to faliure is just burning more cals it isnt making you grow any more.
