Is it just me, or are they really irritating? The two worse ones are; The lads who stop their training for a chat on the phone (usually about how much beer they drink at the weekend) whilst holding up a long que of people waiting to use the Smiths machine (or whatever it is) whilst they socialise. The girls who sit on X piece of equipment yattering away to their mates about the latest gossip in their lives. Making sure nobody else can use the equipment whilst they yatter on and on. And do bugger-all whilst doing it. Even more annoying is the dirty look they give you if you enter their personal space (to, for instance, us the machine they're been sat on for twenty minutes of chatting) whilst they're chattering. I'm not anti-mobile. To be honest I don't have a big problem with the people who take their mobile in and, when it rings, either get off the station, wipe it etc and let someone else use it or finish what they're doing, wipe down, and call the other person back, leaving the equipment free for the next person. Similarly the people who have a conversation like "Hiya. Can't really talk I'm in the gym... Oh, yeah. I left it on top of the cupboard... No, the one behind my desk... Okay? No worries. See ya tomorrow.. Bye!". Fair enough. So. Should gyms ban mobiles?? One Gym I went into had a "Mobile Zone", complete with chargers and whatnot where people could use their phones, provided they didn't hold any equipment up in order to do so.

Doesn't really bother me , as long as people are respectful , unfortunately , they rarely are though ! I understand completely that sometimes people need to be contactable - fine , so keep your phone close to you and then , if it rings - take it outside and talk to your friends , no problem at all But the idiots that take calls in the gym , loudly while taking up a piece of equipment ? , thats different ! Something that seems to happen a lot at our gym , is when the 17 year old "gangstas" are training , they'll spend the bulk of their time walking out the front of the gym with their phones in their hand ( elbow flared right up for optimum twattiness ) to meet the Saxo driving idiot on the other end of the call , then they'll shake hands and say "awrite saaan " to each other , and chat about what they did last weekend for 20 minutes , then they'll come back in and train for another 5 minutes , untill the next phone call ! Each to their own !

As long as someone isn't chatting for ages and hogging the equipment then I dont really have a problem with it. I personaly like to get away from phones and all that stuff when I'm at a gym.

The gym is for one thing, training. People who use phones in the gym annoy me. I was on the treadmill the other week and there was a woman on the step machine. She was on the phone and managing to maintain a conversation! I don't want to hear what you're up to, get off the machine and take the conversation elsewhere!

So you want people to work out in silence, are 2 friends next to each other on the step machine not allowed to chat?

never understand people complaining about mobile phones in gyms... not a silence zone or a library and no effect on anyone else!

Yeah, I think it's fine so long as they have the consideration not to block up machines for extended periods whilst they're on the phone. I don't have a problem with people taking or making calls between stations out of everyone's way. Or even a very quick "Hi. I'm in the gym... Yeah, okay.... I'll see you around eightish...bye.." kind of call between sets. All provided the subject matter is suitable, of course. I really don't care if the 17 year old gangsta wannabe got a gobble of some girl who works in McDonalds or not.

Was funny that she was stepping away with one hand on the machine and the other on her phone. The person on the other end probably had little idea that she was on the machine and could have easily enough been sitting in a cafe somewhere. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong. Maybe should respect the fact she could maintain a conversation whilst stepping away.
