right now this isnt about asking where to get stuff from, as im clued up on that. but... my question is this.

If i already have a copy of windows xp, but i dont use it, can i legally use that cd key with a different edition of xp?

Thing is, i have xp, legally purchased, but ive seen a lot of hacked editions with extra features and some with features striped, such as black edition, red edition etc... could i use my cd key with these instead of my legal disc?

As far as im aware its the license to use the software, so i should be able to use the cd key on any program as long as i dont use it on more than one machine...?

Also, whats the difference between the different xp's?
ive found black edition, red edition, and i think there was gold...
ive also found xp lite which is only 160mb in size and is fully striped.

No it wont work mate, the key will only work for that eddition and service pack.

Give it a try.

I use my own homemade image of XP that also about 160mb, wouldn't go back to the original now.

I cant see it working. There are about 8 different versions of xp and in my experience the serial numbers have never been transferrable across different platforms.
