Contract developer Place I work ATM has lots of young, 'normal' developers... to be honest I haven't met that many that fit the stereotypes. There's even women working in the dev team !

i've been working in IT for about 10 years, - I come accross socially inept weirdos all the time. Anyone else thinking of a career change what with the threat of outsourcing becoming more and more apparent?

IT, more years than I care to admit. Oracle DBA mostly. I enjoy the work and don't find it any more geeky than anything else although developers do seem a different breed

While I was still a developer I would frequently go out to client sites. I got feedback that users were too scared to complain to me about the software It probably doen't help that just for fun I like to take a big swig of a brew and say "Ooh that's good. Tastes like prison tea".

I'm an IT Manager....(for my sins....) If you're aged between 21 and 30, with long dark hair, look a bit like Kate Beckinsale, and want a job in IT...... .....you can start on Monday. * There is a definate shortage of women working in IT. Too much testosterone in your average IT Department. We're lucky in out Team - I have enough on my own, hence me wishing to balance things out. I think I'll sack the rest of them, and replace them with Girls Aloud.

Anyone else thinking of a career change what with the threat of outsourcing becoming more and more apparent? Nope. There are some companies that value communication. Example, recent project was outsourced based on a quote from UK developers. The project was committed to offshore developers and came in 3 times the UK quote when completed. Offshoring can work sometimes (I use Romanian based developers sometimes) providing there is good communication, a lot of offshore companies do not understand what they are being told despite answering "yes" to everything. There is still strong UK based development/consultant industry, you just need to keep your skills up to date or find a niche.

Technology Consultant for a big 4 firm. IT Auditing and Advisory for me. The IT professional image isn't true in my line of work, although it is in the industry as a whole IMO.

yeah I work in IT, design server builds, Network Infastructures that type of thing. yep work with a lot of geeks and I pretty much stick out like a sore thumb! But at least I rarely have to work with the Unix guys as they look like 70's math teachers with beards, sandles sport jackets with leather patches on the elbows etc

I'm a developer. I'm a bit of a geek. But I can pass for normal under the right light. Many around me have never seen sunlight.
