because they are sad w4nkers and have nothing better in their life than football.

You are a sad w8nker for not liking football then. Grow up

It's called passion Spirit mate. If Cardiff win the FA Cup I will be in tears guaranteed. If they lose it I will stay behind and clap Pompey and the players.

Only been through relegation once and I felt more anger than upset to be honest. Doesn't help when you have thousands of Gillingham fans laughing at you

PS Spirit, are Arsenal your local team?

i can understand people being dissapointed or angry but to cry other a game of football is pathetic and i dont think im the one who needs to grow up.i have sports i enjoy but i dont sit and sob to myself when my favorite moto x rider doesnt win or comes last.

The closest I've been to tears over a sporting event was when England won the rugby world cup.Being a West Ham fan I've had my share of misery but I'd never cry about being relegated personally.I know some people who live and breathe football and would definitely cry if we went down.Big boneheads as well, not young kids.It means so much to them its unreal. In response to leerc I bet there's some die hard football fans would view people eating strict diets and spending hours in the gym to get bigger muscles as sad ****ers.Different strokes.

I cried when Reading lost to Bolton in the playoff final, but thats because I was a kid. I can see why it happens, some people really do live for their football (or other chosen sport) but I personally couldn't put so much importance on sport.

no, i can understand annoyance etc but its just the crying that gets me

only people who i suppose i can understand crying are shareholders - because the relegation directly affects their pockets

but fans, cant see it

With all due respect mate, as an Arsenal fan, you can't comment on this. It's like Richard Branson questioning why the homeless person who he passes on his way to work looks unhappy.

I personally always thought it was dumb that people cried at football. Then, when I went to watch my beloved West Ham lose in the playoff final a few years ago against Crystal Palace in Cardiff, I actually had tears in my eyes after the game, as did my best friend and co-Muscletalk member Delboy888 who was sat next to me. Fact of the matter is, football is an emotionally involving game, which a lot of people put much time, money and effort into, and sometimes even fight over. So, no surprise really when you think about it that it can evoke tears and extreme emotional reactions in some people when things don't go to plan.

Nobody has yet mentioned the fact that your team pretty much gets destroyed when you are relegated

You go from watching great players play great football, to watching much less great players playing much less great football. Anyone who's team has been relegated will know that it's a bad thing to happen, if they even remotely support their team

And frankly if someone wants to cry over something I'm not going to do the "Big I Am" and start insulting them lol. How other people express their emotions is their business. What do I care?

Personally, when my team was relegated, and relegated again, I was really pissed off, both times. And there are plenty of fans who are a lot more into their football than I am

To ask why people would cry shows a real lack of understanding and empathy. To actually insult people for crying, well, there's no point even commenting on that TBH

People are tribal, and I suppose we associate our football team with this aswell in a way.

Almost as if we have a connection with our 'heroes'

i seriously hope that wasnt aimed at me as i have at no point even attempted to insult said fans

simply trying to understand why they do it

in my mind relegation of the football team does not elicit extreme emotions - we win = i am happy, we lose = i am a little sad

my nephews and neices were born = i am ecstatic, i lose my job = i am very down

I love my team. My side went out of business a few years ago before we got back in and I was close to tears. I ve supported them for 21 of my 27 years. However crying when your team gets relegated is in my opinion pathetic, and anyone who takes football that seriously must have pretty sad lives,.

Every day I hear Rangers and Celtic fans bickering about the most trivial petty nonsense you have ever heard, on radio phone ins, I despair that grown mens lives are so unfullfilled or lacking that all they can get so worked up about is either Rangers or Celtic getting some pereceived advantage from a ref/ The SFA/ the media..... It is absolutely pathetic.

I dont think you can say until you have been in the position.

But when Arsenal get relegated next season will see if you cry or not.

I do think a lot of it is to do with "proving" how devoted a football fan you are.

Personally I save my tears for times when people are hurting. People don't think about each other anything like enough these days - it's too easy to distract yourself with things like football, telly and the cult of the celeb.

I cried a couple of tears of frustration at Sheffield United last season after we'd managed to stay up but due to The Premiership being a dodgy money-based con they went down and West Ham didn't. Ooooh I was mad on their behalf!

And I cried when we got promoted into the Prem after years of being poo. We've only been relegated once (1993) and it was rubbish but I didn't cry. To be honest I'd quite happily get relegated from the Prem as it's no fun anymore and it costs a bleeding fortune.

I'll cry when my Mum dies, I'll cry if I ever get my heart broken and I'd cry if someone put my balls in a vice, but I could never cry over someone else (who I don't know) missing out on a sporting achievement. I find it interesting how fans basically take reflected glory from their teams i.e.on Saturday, Man U fans would have actually felt superior to Chelsea fans because they have arbitrarily (or through the chance of their location of birth) chosen to associate themselves with one club. Though in fact they themselves have achieved nothing. Equally, for example, Birmingham fans have not failed in anything by getting relegated, it simply means they will now have a season of watching their team win in some slightly smaller stadia, rather than getting beaten every week in big ones.

I know , I know, I wouldn't understand I'm not a fan. Well I do understand as I have felt these kinds of feelings in the past (Man U winning European cup 1999, England's repeated failure in tournaments like Euro 96) but I was younger then and as I've got older it all just seems a bit silly and I can't bring myself to care that much.

People cry at different things

What is important to one person may not be to the next. And as for crying itself, well that is a whole other ball game, if you'll pardon the pun. People do not always cry at the things which are most upsetting. Surely we all know this. For example, you won't ever see me crying at a funeral, but you may see me crying at a chick flick

I'm surprised that so many find this footy issue hard to comprehend

I don't personally cry because of football, never have and never will. But I can understand it. It's not hard to understand that different people have different values to myself. Is it?

I could understand if these big football teams consist of local players, ran by a local coach who wants the team to succeed for the sake of it. But they seem to have many skilled foreigners who are there not because they give a sh1t about the fans but because they get an obscene amount of money, with the managers being businessmen who want the team to win for money or personal glory, so with that in mind I find it difficult to understand why somebody could cry over it.
