After suffering an exertion headache a few weeks ago I had to have 2 weeks off training, and then come back to training with a little less intensity. When I did pullups for the first time after the injury, I started getting the headache, so i stopped after just a few reps of my first set and decided to try lat pull-down instead with low weight and strict form. The same thing happened. I seem to be fine with other exercises, even squats and deadlifts, just pull-ups/pulldowns are becoming unbearable (been to docs, its now about 3-4 weeks since initial headache, and all seems to be ok till i do these movements). Heres what my back routine at the moment looks like: Pull-ups (tried replacing with lat pull-downs) 3x10 T-Bar rows (with Barbell) 3x10 Deadlifts 3x10 Seated cable rows 2x10 (only added these to end of workout in last couple of weeks to try to compensate for poor performance in pullups/pull-downs) Is it possible to build wide lats without pull ups or pull downs, I was thinking of adding another row instead, probably barbell row, but just looking at getting some suggestions and looking to find out if omitting pull-ups, which i have been doing for years, will make a significant impact on my gains. Cheers.

I only ever do deadlifts and bent-over rows, and have done for a long time, yet my lats are pretty wide So for me, not doing pull ups doesn't seem to have hampered development What was the doctor's opinion on your problem?

Thanks for that mate, i was hoping to hear that its still possible to develop the lats well without the need for them. The doc just confirmed that it was an exertion headache and suggested I lay off weight training for a few days and take painkillers, which i did. Ended up being a couple of weeks as the headache kept coming back with exertion. Then it finally subsided and gradually started training again, all seems fine till i do pull ups. Seems to be to do with my head posotioning during exercise. So i try to maintain a neutral head position during all training, which works other than for pull ups/pull downs.

Fair enough. No point persevering with an exercise if it makes you feel like that. It's a decent exercise but not essential IMO My excuse BTW for not doing pull ups is basically that I don't like them
