Go John! Go John!

Yes, people are missing the point here. He is not being criticised because he is rich and happy. He is being criticised as he promotes bull**** ideas and his ridiculous cult to the public.

I wonder what our Tom makes of that impression. If he has any sense of humour or any degree of humility he'd have to see the funny side.Somehow methinks he won't though.

Another actor (and a real life close mate) did a spoof of him, so he must have had some sence of humour about it....ill try and find that one.

I'm saying he lives what most would consider a dream - and hence, is probably a pretty happy guy.

Same is true of the Pope or Kim Jong-Il or Robert Mugabe.

Great power and wealth do not place individuals beyond criticism.

quote:

Even if he's not, his achievements far out weigh his failings, which is something most people would / should aspire to.

I disagree.

His contribution to the arts isn't (I believe) all that significant and he spends much of his time acting as the mouthpiece of a dangerous cult and making ill-judged comments about psychiatry.

I believe that going from some short-arse with bad teeth...to probably the world's most famous movie star, is a hell of an achievement.

I don't care what his "contribution to the arts" is - and I doubt anyone else who isn't a Guardian reader does.

I think he's a role model because - despite a religious belief that's JUST as illogical as any other - he's gone from very little, to very much.

To be honest, I find it hard to stomach the idea Scientology is more dangerous than militant Islam, Christianity....or even the Mormons. It's a religion that preaches self-improvement - albeit expensive self-improvement. They don't preach death unto others, or that God will send you plenty of virgins, or female circumcision, or that AIDS is a punishment by God, or that Condoms are wrong....etc.

To be honest, they're one of the SAFEST religion around, taken in context (which people hardly ever do).

I'd prefer if the Pope was a Scientologist - that way he wouldn't tell everyone to avoid condoms, this causing untold deaths in Africa...instead he'd say watch out for Zardos (or whoever), and buy my book. Much safer.

Famous for all the wrong reasons.

'The arts' include cinema.

A role model to you, then. A clown to everyone else.

Don't they?

Mormons have to give 10% of their income to the Church. Every other religion takes donations...which make the people giving them feel good.

You honestly think asking for money is a worse crime than telling people condoms are evil?

You're trying to excuse the nefarious activities of Scientology by casting them relative to the nefarious activities of the Catholic Church?

How does that work?

because it's unfair to criticise the guy weeing in the street when another guy is mugging old ladies.

given that one is far worse than the other, it'd be fairer, and make more sense, to concentrate on the bigger wrong.

I think it's more to do with blind admiration of the commercial success of Scientology, ignorant of the human cost and sinister consequences of their activities.

no, concentrate on the bigger wrongs first.

given everyone has limited resources, and there's an unlimited level of "wrong" in the world....you've got to budget - just like I only have 24hrs in a day, I have to cut and snip and prune what I want to do every day. If I tried to do everything, I'd fail. So...I pick the most important things, do those, and ignore the rest.

Would anyone really model there life on Tom Cruise? He's done well for himself, but I can't really see anything amazing that he has done that is worthy of becoming a role model.

He's an average actor with a good dentist, not much to learn from him is there?

As for the religon, L Ron won his bet didn't he lol

John, what about "Top Gun" was that not an artistic contribution?

You are trying and failing to obfuscate the fact that Tom Cruise is the most famous adherent and advocate for a sinister cult that broadcasts dangerous and reckless messages about mental health, operates unscrupulous commercial activities and hounds and harasses critics.

OK, well let's say then that his artistic contribution is on a level with someone like, ooh I dunno, Steven Seagal.
