Scientology isn't a religion. It's a cult.

Difference being?

Most European countries do not recognise Scientology as a legitimate religious organisation.

What's that got to do with communism?

attacking someone for trying to sell a product - not forcing people to pay for it, but offering it for sale, and buyers accepting that offer, is communistic.

So the people who hand out free papers on the street - communists are they?

Those little crackers with cubes of cheese the lady hands out in Sainsbury's. Communist!

Wikipedia. Communists!

Muscletalk. Writhing hotbed of COMMUNISTS!

How on earth have I said a free product is communistic?

Attacking someone for selling something is communistic - people attack Scientology because they "sell" religious education. I don't see anything wrong with that, since I see religious education as a product just like formal education.

All the things you talk about above btw...are examples are capitalism - 1), 3) and 4) are funded by adverts, the viewers being the "product", and 2) being a loss leader.

Yes, yes, I salute my leaders every day.

Most European countries don't recognise Melatonin as safe when numerous studies demonstrate the fact. Are you honestly saying...that whether something is a religion or not is based soley on politicians in suits saying so?

Ok, can you clarify just who and what you believe to be communist - within the context of this thread?

A person who objects to Scientology more than any other religion, because it charges.

IMO....every religion charges, some in more obvious ways than others, and the main objection to a religion shouldn't be what it costs, but what it's impact on the world is. Scientology has a teeny, tiny impact on the world.

Who's doing that?

As stated several posts ago - I believe that's why most people criticise Scientology more than other religions. That and it's new.

Well I did start off by saying I like his films and own a fair few on DVD.
I have no problems with his acting and creative output.
There are far worse candidates for that nomination.

His whole stance on Psychiatry did piss me off though as it was based on the official stance of Scientology.
Check out the first link I gave earlier on.
It's shocking. It really is.

I think people are more afraid of voicing their opinion on Islam for instantly being called racists.
Scientology is seen in a different way; not clearly identifiable with a particular part of the world.

The same could be said for daring to say a single negative thing about Jewish people.
The automatic stupid answer is, "That's anti-semitic" which is a completely retarded retort.
Semitic would be the language, of which Arabic is also part of.
Anti-language?
It's a word that's been hijacked. Like hijacking land, but with Oxford dictionary conotations.

I really don't care for religion though.
People will proclaim their own religion as being the most peaceful, but do little to protect that peaceful fun loving tag.

TF do you know much about Scientology their practises how they move, their motvies what they want to achieve the entire background story and how they promote themselves?

Because from your posts it doesnt seem like you do, Scientology if you read it has very little based on a religious belief, in fact the only poeple taht think it is are Scientologists (for TAX reasons), they dont even try and sell it as a religion, more like a practrise of life.

Is there a decent link that would provide a non biased view point of Scientology? I am intrigued to know what it's all about. I take it they are good at science, probably get at least a 'C' grade at GCSE.

All you need to know really

Well I enjoyed the Hubbard's Mission Earth books, but I tend to feel helpless in the event of a serious accident so I dont think I'd make a good scientologist .........I also dont have any money so I doubt they will be trying to sign me up any time soon

I was hoping it wouldn't be necessary as it's getting close to clocking off time and it will eventually drop off the first page and disappear.

I'm pretty aware of it - I've seen / read things etc.

Off memory Hubbard's book is a bit like a self-help book - you look up pages depending on what is crap in your life, and it has some pretty practical advice. I've also seen the documentaries, South Park bit etc etc. So I'm probably more aware than most, but by no means an expert.

I'm not "defending" Scientology really, I just think that it's too easy a target - if it was 400yrs old, people would treat it the same way as they treat every other religion....with a degree of respect, even if they don't believe in it.

John -

to be honest mate, I agree with all the criticism people generally place on Scientology...but I think the same ones could be placed on any religion. It's a bit unfair imo to have a go at that whilst ignoring all the other religions that do their fair share of good and bad in the world. We should also remember, that for as many people who claim Scientology has hurt them....there's also many who claim it's helped them (Tom Cruise as an example from this post). Now I'm not saying this makes telling people that aliens will save them, is a good thing, but it'd be nice to have some perspective in what is often a very lopsided debate.

LM -

That's my last post on this topic
