Deadlift
BB Rows
Chins

A good back can be built with other exercises, as long as you progress. But I think the above is a pretty solid combination.

Rows, chins/pulldowns, deadlifts. Mind you there's not much else that you couldn't fit into those 3 catageris perhaps apart from shrug variations.

granted bent over rows are good, but if you were going to have one, surely you'd go for deadlift?

deads are quality, i like to alternate between db rows (on bench rowing with one arm per time) and bb rows.

i stretch my back every so often while do the exercises, i wan to 'feel' my lats if you get me.

Totally agree with you here mate, I don't rate deadlifts too highly tbh for the back, too much hips and legs IMO.

True but you won't see a good deadlifter with a bad back for his size.

I think rows are the best single upper back exercise.

I agree Deads just hit my arse and legs. I prefer to do direct back work like Bent over row. Cable row, Chins, Pulldowns, One armed Dumbell row. T Bar rows etc plenty of exercises can hit the back IMO

That;s becuase it's a hip dominant rear chain exercise, what Iain said though stands.

Actually the back responds really well 'isometric' type movements, also it being so different in this regard means that you could have deads on a different day allowing you to hit the back more often.

I usually prefer trainees to use trad or sumo deads on a read chain legs day in a two upper two lower sessions split.

I don't know how powerlifters structure there routines but is deads the only movement they do that hits back ?

You can hit the lower back hard with rows depending how you do them.

Never seemed to get anything out of BB rows, so little infact I dropped them.

Deadlifts and chins form the staple of my back work.

As with most things there is a lot of variation in what people do. Many may just do deadlift training, many do upper back work as part for their deadlift training. Others train upper back to help benching. I think in general powerlifters will do a variety of upper back lifts like many other weight trainees.

Last week I did; machine rows, pulldowns and dumbbell rows. The week before I did chins, rows and pulldowns. I am not too consistent with the lifts just get the work in to keep some general strength there. My favorite lift is dumbbell rows.

I could swear I typed this; it's very similar to what I do lol. I love doing dumbell rows to my hips (not straight up like most do, more in an arching motion). I also switch it up, but do a fair bit of upper back work throughout the week (one both my bench days)

Ditto again. I am too busy being anal about squat/bench/deadlift technique to worry about what upper back stuff I do. Just get the work in without hurting anything and it'll be good!

Sorry to nit pic mate but if the majority are doing other direct back work then you carn't really say deadlifting is responsible for there back development?

One exercise i carn't get away with is dumbell rows just carn't seem to get a feel for them.

Trebor, if you haven't before, try then by letting the dumbell hang straight down, and instead of pulling it straight up, pull it back/up to touch your hip. I wasn't a big fan of them before, but I love this way
