ok to use the smith for this? or do you prefer barbell...if so why?

Basically use whatever's free, but tend to alternate between the two.

I prefer people to use the barbell for the same old reason, movement tracking and muscle firing patterns.

The barbell just allows you to move as you need to. That's not to say the smiths won't 'work'.

given the choice i prefer barbell.
but general trianing a smith machine will be fine.

i use the smith as my tri`s are fried after benching, i also find i can concentrate on power rather than trying to stabilize myself...

as with scruff, i use smith, get more wieght on it after benching so load is greater, but i do agree that the natural motion of a free weights barbell is more flexible and focuses on using all stabiliser muscles too.

I like the smith for close grip but I do not have one now i train at home so use free bar
I do also sometimes use a EZ bar you can go closer with less wrist strain
