Half them dicks arnt real fans, they just live in the dark ages and follow the crowd because of the secterian motive, police should show no tolerence to these wa*"ers, remember years ago in Dublin when the English fans were playing up and they forgot that the way out was through a tunnel lined by Gaurds ( Irish Police ) nice.

ITN - 24 minutes agoPolice chiefs were "sickened and disappointed" after Rangers fans ran amock through Manchester. (Advertisement) More than 100,000 supporters had travelled from Glasgow for their team's Uefa Cup final against Zenit St Petersburg. Many had been drinking all day and violence erupted at around 7.30pm when a big screen which should have show the match failed. Greater Manchester Police said a total of 42 people had been arrested during the night including three for ticket touting. Calm was restored after five hours of running battles between fans and riot police but the city centre streets are still strewn with rubbish, cans of beer and broken glass. Rangers lost the final 2-0 after a lacklustre display at the City of Manchester Stadium but the event was marred by the violence away from the ground. Assistant Chief Constable Justine Curran of Greater Manchester Police said: "A minority of thugs have overshadowed what should have been a great occasion. "I've watched them commit damage, assault my officers and I'm really sickened and disappointed." Beer was on tap from off-licences with supporters carrying crates of cheap lager around - Tesco opened at 7am, 18 hours before kick-off. Excitement and alcohol levels mounted all day with some fans spending hundreds of pounds on travel and hotels just to watch the game in the fan zones. Throughout the day the atmosphere had been friendly - but when a "technical hitch" hit the screen in Piccadilly Gardens, many fans, already heavily drunk, turned nasty. The broken big screen was pelted with bottles, as were riot police as they moved in to try to quell the trouble. Police and council officials blamed a "minority" of fans for the violence. Rangers fans blamed the local council's "shambolic" organisation, but another said the behaviour of his fellow supporters left him "ashamed to be a Scotsman". Thats disgraceful carry on by a minority of thugs.

Cant understand anyone wanting to be in that crowd(as per pic on the other page)any hassle or problems and youd get trampled to death,IMO typical thugs who can only feel brave when in a mob. if you want to enjoy the game then fine but if you want violence go to a boxing /MMA Gym im sure after about 15secs of sparring the urge to feel all tough and hard will be gone

Listening to Radio 1 on the way into work this morning they had a clip of a Rangers fan. He said something like "It was unprovoked [meaning the police battering a few of them]. The big screen broke down so some people started throwing bottles at it and at the police" Are they seriously that stupid to think that pelting the big screen and police with bottles doesn't somehow constitue "provoking"

Poor showing from the fans. No excuses for rioting like that. All the other teams in Scotland have excellent reputations for their supporters, Celtic having won the UEFA and FIFA fair play awards when we lost the UEFA cup final a few years ago. To be fair though, given the close proximity of Manchester to Glasgow it was always going to be an excuse for the idiots who would not fork out on a journey overseas to come down and cause trouble. Certainly looks like the minority causing the bother, again.

Could it get any better? Justice for football as the "anti football brigade" get a beating and their fans show why no one likes them! They are utter scum and I am just sorry they have to come back up the road! They are an embarrassment and well done to Manchester for putting up with them! As for some of the comments on here lets not mix up Scots fans with these low life! As mentioned above, we took 100,000 fans to Seville in 2003 and their was no trouble! We won an award and supporters clubs were set up by the Spanish fans due to their respect for the Celtic fans!

ORIGINAL: Fat Pete So why do 100,000 + rangers fans come to the city where the game is played when they don't have tickets to see the game. Because they relish the opportunity to get pissed up and run amok perhaps? Packs of drunk men love violence.

There was way more than 100,000 We are in Droylsden about 2 miles from the stadium, and 3.5 miles from the city centre... I can sort of understand that the fans traveled for the atmosphere just like some of the hatton fans in Vagas. But why did some of them come all the way from scotland to what the match in little dingey pubs in Droylsden!!! It's the inside of a pub, no where near the action or atmosphere, you may as well have stayed in scotland. Another thing I don't understand is why have it organised to be shown in the city centre? We have a few parks like philips park near the stadium and heaton park they could have put the big screens up there. And now they are not going to put the big screens on for United our own local team. It's a joke. Much respect to the police, they did there best trying to handle it. My GF was there this morning and the place was covered in litter, a bleeding mess.

agree john peel park in salford heaton park in midd two examples that could have been used i also agree with you about the pubs thing, whats the point in coming down to watch it in the derby? the ones round the ground fair enough (the vic, mary d's, the manchester, the townley, the bradford, etc) i can see the point in going in them but out of town nah

They even managed to have 17 arrested at a fanzone at Ibrox stadium... A stadium with 30,000 of their own fans, no opposing team or fans. The Scottish press seem to be justifying all the above mentioned trouble, because a big TV never worked and the fans pelted him with bottles so he didn't get the chance to fix it. Sadly Celtic are perpetually linked with Rangers and this becomes "Old Firm" trouble, and Celtic are grouped in also like Drago did earlier on.

what gets me like I said is there's always some excuse or justification; "the screen broke", "they made us queue too long", "they put the home fans too close to the away fans" utter scum they'd be the first to complain if anyone came and messed up where they live
