What width of grip do you use for CGBP?
-
14 May 2008 16:13
Just interested to hear what width you use for CGBPing? I use ~12" - 14" between my thumbs which is roughly shoulder width. I see people in the gym using ridiculously close grips at times, some people even have their hands touching. Also, do you find your stronger at CGBP than regular pressing? Im pretty sure i feel more comfortable with the above grip width. I noticed mobster uses a close(ish) grip for benching. cheers Tom

About 8" between my hands. Wider encourages me to use shoulders more, and a closer grip forces my elbows out as its not a comfortable ROM for me. Took a few weeks to find what worked best for me.

Probably about 8" as well I think, put my hands on the grippy part of the bar as close to the smooth as possible (if you get me), but no my CGBP is not stronger than my regular BP, I don't do it regulary any more though.

Scruffy - how do you find your CG decline press compares to your max flat bench? Cheers Tom

Usually with pinkies JUST inside rings (basically butted up against them). I train for strength, and have heard from a fair few reputable sources that any further then a hand's-width away from your competition grip wont give you close to as much carryover

I used to do them about 6" apart but wrist pain soon out a stop to that.. Now just under shoulder width apart.

As far to the outside of the shiny surface without touching the knurling.

Of course it all depends what type of oly bars you're using... The grip is generally shoulder width or a good inch or two closer but it depends upon the trainee, there no one strict for for any exercise.

I meant it as in, if I go for a wider or closer grip, my form is not as good (i.e. flaring my elbows out and uncomfortable on my wrists). So the ~8" gap I have between my hands works best for me.

About shoulder width for me also, any closer and it's quite hard on my wrists, plus the bar feels harder to control - more wobbly

Never thought about this but what some of you call close grip is what I just call bench press LOL I line my thumbs on the bar make them touch and that sets my grip width (about 6"), same for tricep push downs. Normal bench press my little finger is on or just inside the rings. But I would have just called that a normal grip normal bench press, the other grips outside the rings I would say is a wide grip normal bench press.
