This is my second.

Have a look at GIMP.

It's free and you can do a lot with it.
An old friend of mine uses it and her results are top class.

To make the animations, you can use a basic Gif animator.

Give it a go, or I'll photoshop your progress pictures.

Dunno.
Never used it, but it can't be worse than Photoshop CS2.
Have a look at their forum.
It's never as bad as it looks...unless your arms have been torn off.
