good question

i thin it is probably from a bit of science and a bit of experience

put it one way though if i could gain 0.5lbs of muscle per month now after just 18 months of training i would be happy....0.5lbs per week is more like beginner gains and steroid gains

.5lb a week is quite a lot if you think about it.

2lbs a month, up to 24 lbs a year of lean tissue

thats why generally monitoring and adjusting past the point of newbie/1 year gains is advised. I would think most if not all trainers were smart enough to learn their own bodies in this timeframe

btw that 0.5lbs is not lean mass its a target to gain in terms of total bodyweight, no one gains 0.5lb of lean mass past a certain point. maybe half that but it will show up as 0.5 due to increased glycogen and water storage etc

its just a more realistic benchmark than the 1-2lbs a week BS

re- read

tio... imo any fat free mass counts, so if training increases glycogen and water as well as muscle then it all counts as it all stays whilst training continues.

i would say i have gained at this rate at the beginning however i now expect gains of about 4lbs per year from my body and that is why i would much like to focus on remaining leaner as the mass changes wont show very quickly

I got the 0.5lb/week max figure from Lyle's site. It's an estimate. Women & men with small builds will gain less. Newbies & naturally-muscley men may gain more.
