After filling out the survey yesterday I started to wonder why everyone thinks all bodybuilders are insecure, have image problems or are mental in general? Why is this? How many iterations of a question do they really need to ask to work out whether you are violent, vain or have psychiatric problems? Why can you not just be passionate about something, without the need for people without drive to believe there is a mental issue behind what we try to achieve? People who collect things are never questioned as to why they want to collect more, even when they have ten of the same item and will never show them to anyone? Or a racing driver who tries to get that little bit more power from an engine so they can go that little bit faster than the next person? Or ultimately the athlete who wants to run that little bit faster? So why is bodybuilding on so many level deemed to be inappropriate and undertaken by vain, insecure, sadists? Why are we not just looked at like any other athlete or hobbyist for that matter - it seems to me, the ones who are not bodybuilding are the one with the mental problem and self image problem, trying to justify why they look like a slob and do not do anything about it!!

It's a little different form the social norm - that's all

Because poeple, in general, have no concept of what its like to be deidcated to some form of fitness, esp on a day to day , meal to meal, basis, or they cant see how it can be such a priority to some. And the reason Bodybuilding has a stero type is the same reason as everything else, the media. It is strange as some of the nicest poeple I have ever met are fcuking HUGE! lol.

You are definately on to something there mate this might well sound completely narcissistic... but i think some people are actively jealous as in they activley envy bigger muscles 'wish i looked like him' types. while others are subconsciously jealous so they feel inadequate but they don't necessarily attribute it too physical presence/appearence. were just animals at the end of the day and because we dont try and bonk the superior alpha males on the head with big sticks anymore we try and dicredit them instead.

Not so much Jealousy as their own insecurites creeping out....maybe envy at what your are doing, (being active), not so much about what you have achieved.

It's not *just* body-builders - it's anyone who's "into" something that a majority of the population isn't. People who are really "into" certain musical genres or cars or horseriding or gardening or collecting smurfs are also seen as "weird" & people think they have "a problem" because they behave differently in and in a way the majority don't relate to. Oddly enough, a grown adult who cares sufficiently for football to spend their entire disposable income on it, dedicate their social life to it, get tattooed with their teams and even cry or riot when they loose aren't seen as "weird", most likely because their own interest is common enough to be "normal". When, in fact, as second's rational thought will tell you that their behaviour is actually pretty irrational and unthinking. The same is true of people who are obsessed with their favorite "soap opera" and cannot bare to miss an episode and "gossip" constantly about the fictional characters on the programme, and even buy magazines about it. I do think that some of the more exteme body-builders do endanger their health, but it's their's to endanger - so that's up to them.

I got half way through that survey and thought more and more that it was bordering on insulting. Questions about porn stars penis's?? WTF??

I think that the reason is that there is a notable percentage of bodybuilders who do have image issues, and therefore the naive public brand us all the same

Society as a whole tends to stereotype things, its not just BBers who get a raw deal.

i think James got it spot on, Who here thinks they are 'big enough'? Have you see that new car advert might be for mondeo not sure) where they show you a female bodybuilder and pose the question is this a body designed to perfection or an obsession? I think its an obsession, i was never self conscious before i went to the gym now im constantly looking in the mirrior to see if ive shrunk yet. if i i miss the gym i feel like im gona shrink. I dont think im in the minority here, prehaps im thre only one willing to admit it.

The ones who walk with invisible carpets, talk loudly about their drug use, feel the need to glare at smaller people, etc DO have a problem and are rightly judged by others as having one. Most built lads who walk and act normally get gawped at but few people actually think they have issues.

Felt quite happy being very decarbed and stringy-looking getting ready for the under 80kg class (12 stone 7lb-ish) for my last show, too. Sheer size is not the be all and end all of my life, so, yeah, I think I'm big enough.

I think the whole of society has image problems, everyone wants to look good which is why lazy scumbags like putting bodybuilders down because deep down they wish they were musclebound beasts.
