If you added up the tax a "20 a day" smoker contributed to the treasury over his / her lifetime, would it be more or less than the cost bourne out by the NHS in order to care for the same smoker due to smoking related illness ?
If it is more, then why does the govenment keep banging on about people giving up the weed ?
ps I'm a non smoker btw, just wondered what they'd tax us on if everyone gave up smoking ?

smoking contributes somehtign like 8bn to the coffers... drain on the NHS is far lower

Its like everything, not EVERY smoker is going to need treatment, so like most things you are playihng it by the numbers, but as it stand I dont think treatment out weighs amount earned, if it did the tax would simply be made much higher.
I think its been estimated that casual joggers will cost the NHS more in knee/ ankle operations than smokers over all will.

You could join BUPA, be careful wha tyou wish for, its doesnt work in most places!
if EVERYONE went on private care, it wouldnt mean better care.

i recall reading in a paper that for every £1 that smokers COST the NHS the gov. charges smokers £3- THINK it was clarkson in the times but not sure.
same with everything mate- common purchases used to suppliment the minority
how much of fuel tax goes back into car roads??
if the government got what they claim to want (EVERYONE uses public transport) they would be VERY out of pocket!

so that we get used to being told what to do?
What about the profits of the tobacco companies, I mean they surely are up there with 'most corrupt', exploit new markets I guess.
Any one know the actual figures for smoking rates?

Tax from tobacco gets the Government £4billion a year, the cost to treat smoking related disease's is something in the region of £1.2billion a profit there of £2.8billion. Alcohol tax gets the Government £6billion a year, the cost to treat drink related violence and illnesses spirals to well over £8billion, this includes the wages for the doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers the police on the streets.

You've only got to look at the Road fund licence AKA Car Tax, it costs more money to send out the forms, pay the office staff at the numerous DVLA offices across the UK, pay the Post Office commission for giving out the Tax Disc's than what the government gets back in road fund licenses each year. My local MP was telling me a few years ago that the road fund licensing system was a major drain on public resources.

I don't because a line has to be drawn on what's taxed and what's not. That line could never be drawn. For example, tax a donut. The donut people say, 'oi that's not fair why arn't biscuits taxed?'. And they'd have a point Not all biscuits are 'unhealthy' though, so what's taxed and what's not.
Then of course, what about the people that benefit from an energy dense palatable diet?
This has been debated before, I would be against this
