My neighbour backed into my car and squashed the rear side, behind the driver's door.

As the car is a £600 shed, I told him if he bunged me £100, I'd get a rough knock-out job done and call it quits.

However, a letter arrives from his insurer today saying we don't intend to dispute the claim, please hire a car, we'll pay from day one for it.

Then they'll get a quote for a proper undent, a fill and a respray, which will mean the car will be written off as an uneconomical repair.

If that happens, they say, they'll send me a cheque for the pre-accident book value (about £400), then also let me keep the car, which is completely driveable still.

So, he could have paid a ton and been done but instead has put in a claim where I'd imagine his excess will be more than a ton plus I'll get £400 back, plus keep the car, plus get a hire car for a few weeks too.

I was nothing but nice to him when he knocked and told me, so it's not a case of him being scared or anything - I even explained to him I couldn't care less about the car - it's a shed.

Strange. Any ideas why he's gone this route?

He's not short of a few bob - about £50,000 of cars on his drive at a guess.

He probably rang his insurers to tell them about the crash and got talked into making the claim.

Strange though.

No mate - I wouldn't.
And to prove it, I bunged a letter through his door telling him £100 would make it quits. I even signed it.

AFAIK he sustained no damage. I have a Corsa made from tinfoil and recycled bean cans.

Maybe he has no claims protection so won't have to pay out anything.

He'll still have an excess.
And, believe it or not, making a claim with NCB in place still DOES affect your next renewal premium.

Being the victim of an accident can also put your insurance up - even in a non-fault situation. (It's a standard question when taking out a policy now - any accidents in the last three year's, even in a non-fault situation?)

So, I'd rather he gave me £100. If he won't, I won't bother making a claim against his insurance but will be forced to growl at him from now on.
