How much red meat do you eat?

It's my favourite food, i eat either steak or lean mince every day without fail.

Been doing some reading though, and people are saying that's not a good idea.

Any thoughts you lovely bunch of absolute meatheads? ( )

red meat has lots of toxins in it and can cause bowel and colon cancer. also it has ore saturated fat and can therefore raise cholesterol. I'm not a doctor but I think every day is a little excessive although I do usually eat it a couple times a week (although I'm cutting at the moment).

there was a report of a study a few months back on bbc news, think it said no more than 500 a week, it's prob worth a google check though

I currently have about just under 200g lean mince a day.

Is it bad for me? No much more than everything else in the media.

Like wise, averaged out I have about 200g a day. But in a week, some days I may none, yet others I may have 2 or 3 meals with lean beef mince. Everynow and then a frying or sirloin steak if Im in the mood for a big steak.

I think a lot of the problem with empirical evidence used to put across these health warnings comes with the population used.

Ok so you might some bodybuilders/fitness enthusiasts who eat larger quantities of red meat than most - but is this really as detrimental as the average joe who has next to no veg in his diet, no exercise, smokes 30 a day and is out on the piss every weekend?

Is it ****

red meat has lots of toxins in it What "toxins"? and can cause bowel and colon cancer Association does not prove causation. also it has ore saturated fat and can therefore raise cholesterol. Most of the saturated fat in beef is stearic acid which does not raise cholesterol. I'm not a doctor but I think every day is a little excessive although I do usually eat it a couple times a week (although I'm cutting at the moment). I'm not a doctor either and I think that everyday is fine provided it has some veggies with it and that EFAs are sufficient.

there was a report of a study a few months back on bbc news, think it said no more than 500 a week, it's prob worth a google check though
500 what? How about you do the Google check and report back?

You've come across a bit aggressive there, but anyway in answer to your questions:

Toxins, don't know the name of any but someone I know died of bowel cancer that ate a fair amount of red meat and I was informed that red meat is especially bad because of toxins. here is a website that mentions toxins but not what they are:

http://www.bioedonline.org/news/news.cfm?art=1516

as for causation, well it's possible to make a good arguement that its impossible to prove things like that, which is why when you complete a PhD you become a doctor of philosophy and not a doctor of your chosen subject. You can however gather evidence to provide support for an arguement, as with the following links:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3149062.stm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4662934.stm

http://quackfiles.blogspot.com/2005/06/red-meat-linked-to-cancer-risk.html

and of course there will always be arguments to the contrary:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/04/05/1890740.htm

as for the 500 I was missing a g, to be fair on this point it was going to be 500oz, 500lb or 500kg was it?

I can't find a link to a bbc article but here's to another one, no idea of it's credibility though.

http://www.martinfrost.ws/htmlfiles/nov2007/obesity_cancer.html

for me the jury is still out, I often eat 500gto1kg a week, and will continue to do so, I did say that eating it everyday probably is too much from what I've read but I'll prob do it anyway for a while longer

There seem to be health scars with many foods, so i try to go with "Moderation" on everything really.

I eat mackeral/other oily fish ~3x a week, may also have almon once a week - mercury, dioxins and PCBs.
I eat a few cans of tuna per week(2-4perhaps) ... mercury, dioxins, PCBs.
I eat around 100-200of soya mince every day....Phytoestrogens "bad for you" .... "good for you"... two sides battle it out *sigh*.
I eat around 400g of White fish (pollock)... Sigh... Mercury, Dioxins and PCBs.
I eat the occasional steak, perhaps once a week (or another type of red meat) ....Cancer....and all that the rest of the "associations".

I eat turkey mince around 450g per week sometimes more - but ive never heard of any "scars" with regaurds to this? Are there any?
Chicken breast - No health scars here i believe?

If i eat 200g a day of red meat, i'd probably cut down a bit just "to be safe" and simply because its easy to source protein else where (and cheaper!!!).

Finally, the health scars with mercury may be unfounded. I read they found the "lowest level found to be safe, then divided it by 10" to give us a 10fold 'margin for error'. Not sure how true that is though, so take it with a pinch of salt.

I recall reading about "tomato's being severely dangerous in italy", people we're warned against eating them as they had killed some people. They later found out, it was the olive oil i believe, that was the cause of the issues as people we're having it with their tomatos...Ooopsi!

As for soya mince, i've heard phytoestrogens are bad.... others say they're good? Ive no idea.
All i know is, mumma said "everything is good in moderation"

Toxins, don't know the name of any but someone I know died of bowel cancer that ate a fair amount of red meat and I was informed that red meat is especially bad because of toxins. here is a website that mentions toxins but not what they are:

http://www.bioedonline.org/news/news.cfm?art=1516 The word "toxin" is over-used. It's the waste products from bacteria, but just about everything possibly undesirable is called a toxin nowadays. See http://www.mblab.gla.ac.uk/~julian/dict2.cgi?6605

as for causation, well it's possible to make a good arguement that its impossible to prove things like that, which is why when you complete a PhD you become a doctor of philosophy and not a doctor of your chosen subject. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4662934.stm
http://quackfiles.blogspot.com/2005/06/red-meat-linked-to-cancer-risk.html Processed meat gives a statistically-significant 2 x increase in risk factor whereas red meat alone only gives a not-very-significant 1.4 x increase.

and of course there will always be arguments to the contrary:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/04/05/1890740.htm

as for the 500 I was missing a g, to be fair on this point it was going to be 500oz, 500lb or 500kg was it? I thought as such, but had to ask anyway.

I shall carry on eating meat & veg.

Ok, thanks to everyone who replied. I'm basically going to keep eating red meat the way i do then, but to be fair i'll have to up my veg consumption.

Not heard of the 'phytoestrogens', think i'll have a quick read up!
