I need to get this off my chest! - 16 May 2008 23:18
I can't believe the way this country is going, yesterday it cost over £63.00 to fill my car up with petrol, my car is a company car so have fuel card and don't pay, but my wifes car is ours and she works full time and we have to pay the fuel that goes into that.

Then this evening, i'm driving through Swanley, there is a large wide road that runs along the back of the station, people used to park their cars there and walk to the station, its a massively wide road, straight road, about the size of a dual carriageway, and pretty quiet as well, they've only gone and put parking notices up and installed parking meters! The parked cars were not hurting anybody, the parked cars were not outside anybodies houses, no bends in the road, no dropped kurbs that people were parking over, it just seems that the council have realised they are sitting on a gold mine and can earn extra money out of people.

What is this country coming to? Firstly, we have to pay rediculously high prices for our petrol, as said above, it now costs over £60.00 to fill a 1.8 Toyota Avenisis up with fuel, at a cost of £1.15 per litre, we also have to pay road tax to be able to drive our cars on the road, and now they are not just happy with charging us to drive our cars on the road, but they are also charging us to leave our cars stationary on the road Whats all that about?

Is it me or are we being shafted from every angle?

Something has got to give shortly, because i can only see things getting a lot lot worst in the very very near future.

Rant over

Taxes.*

We vote for expensive things - the NHS costs £73bn a year...and you can even get freebie sex change ops.

Social Security pays millions of people to sit at home, and even if you've been out of work for 12 months (so, imo, not really trying to get a job...i know many will say that's balls...but McDonalds always have signs up) you still get paid.

Tell the govt. to spend less, and your other costs will come down. I'd love it if we had a 20% cut in tax, and hence also cut spending on millions and millions of silly things we nanny people with now. People should look after themselves more.**

*Parking charges = a way councils raise money to pay for silly things...like putting TV stands in Manc City Centre so people can watch footie...rather than charging for tickets so only those who want to watch it pay.

Yes you do and you will always have to and IMO the bigger car you drive the more tax you should pay.

I do agree though. things are not looking good at the min, but everyone is in the same postion or even worse.

It's an absolute joke ...

I paid 113.9p per litre today - Utter Madness !!

At work we have just been informed we will only be allowed to park in the staff carpark 3days a week and on those 3days we will have to buy a ticket at £2 a day ...

As they say, while the rich get richer ... the poor get poorer

The poor are also getting "richer" just not in monetary terms.

When did the last poor person have to pay to see a doctor?

When did the last poor person get an increase in state pension? / State child support / State education funding.

These are "benefits in kind", that poor people haven't paid for, but have been paid for by the rich through taxes that are then given to the poor.

Since taxes as a % of overall GDP have risen from 36% in 1997, to 47% today (from memory), the poor have gotten much much richer through massively increased benefits of many, many kinds.

RE: I need to get this off my chest! - 16 May 2008 23:35
It IS getting silly.

Parking has been farmed out to private companies who do the "enforcement" for profit, whereas the police (ie Parking wardens) used to do it to keep the roads from being choked with traffic. Back then if you were not creating an obstruction most traffic wardens would give you 2 minutes to offload your truck or offer advice rather than tickets just to get people moving again. Now days they just want to make their quota and extract as much money as possible. Common sense and objective go out of the window in exchange for making a fat profit for some "contactor" because the mission has gone from "Keep the roads clear and collect fines" to "Make money under to guise of keeping the roads clears". IE it's gone from a service-provisions to a revenue-raiser.

As regards fuel. Just what crisis are we in right now? What am I now paying 125p a Litre for diesel whilst the government record massive tax takes on Petrol and their friends and golf-partners over at the petrol company record year-on-year record profits?? Does this government not realise that the motorist is NOT a bottomless pit from which to extract money and that, if you tax fuel, that cost is passed on to employers, who pass it on to customers, who pass it on to their customers etc etc etc so it ends up as a simple increase in the level of general taxation and a cause of inflation and inconvenient to all??

If you're employed and middle class you're ****ed.

You can claim very few state benefits (no council housing, some child benefits but not much, and few uni subsides for your kids other than that which everyone gets - i.e. uni's in general are mostly state funded).

You also get taxed the most because your income is easy to trace - i.e. your company tells the govt. how much your income is, and it's taken through direct taxes, and indirect taxes, and everything you buy is paid for from post-tax money.

If you're really rich, you leave the country - Isle of Man (ace), Jersey, somewhere else.... - if you're really poor you get a free ride, if you're inbetween....you're...erm...an open wallet? lol

Absolutely right. If you rich enough to avoid the rules or poor enough for them not to apply to you - you're alright.

But if you're a working person with a car and you pay your taxes you are hit for everything as you're an easy target because you follow the rules, your company collect the tax and your car is an easy way to find you and tax you.

If you'e unemployed, drive an uninsured, untaxed, unregistered car and support yourself through petty crime, though, it's too much trouble to find you and there is not money in getting you to pay your taxes, so they leave you alone!

There'll be nationwide riots in Stow on the Wold, Slough, and Welwyn Garden City, and enraged sub-divisional asset-managers will take to the streets and en-masse head to the plush nursing home in Kent where Margaret Thatcher dribbles into her beef Wellington. They will hoist her onto their weedy shoulders and re-instate her leadership status in what will henceforth be recorded in history as the BMW 3-series Revolution.
Ten thousand glorious years.

Probably not the best choice of words, but what i actually meant was something has got to be done about what is happening.

The worrying thing is this:- The price of petrol at £1.15p per litre is selling, we're all still queing at the pumps, because we have no choice, we need to run our cars.

So, if something is selling at an inflated price, why bother reducing the price when you know its still selling?

I can never see the price of petrol falling, they blame in on increased oil prices etc., and yeah it probably is, but when they know they can sell something at a higher price, if the price of oil was to drop, why would they want to go and do something as silly as reduce the price from £1.15 per litre back down to the days of 69.9 per litre?

Its only going to go one way, and thats up!

I can understand if they put double yellow lines on areas of road that otherwise could cause accidents if somebody was to park, but installing parking metres on a road that is the size of an aircraft runway with no houses bordering the road, and the road being really really quiet, i think its just being taken too far - the only reason its been done for is MONEY!

And as i said - they are not only charging us for driving our cars on the road, they are also charging us for stopping our cars on the road, where is the logic there?

Next they will be charging us for stopping at red traffic lights!

we need to run our cars.

Do we ? do need the big powerful engine's that a lot of us have ? do lots of us need two+ cars ? do we need to drive our kids the 1 mile to school ? is a lot of the point of these 'green taxes' to force us to behave in a more environmentaly friendly manner ?

I am of course playing devils advocate

fcuk off should we.... with insurance so high & petrol prices on the rise I think we pay enough tax as it is... and the proposed road tax prices are a joke do you really think the money will go towards fixing any of the potholes I see day in day out? I very much doubt it.
Basically just when you think you can afford that car you've always wanted they implement some other bullsh!t...
