Status: offline 		I heard today that total govt. revenue from taxes on petrol is £60bn.

The NHS costs £73bn.

So basically, every 75p you pay in a litre goes straight to the NHS.

Without this getting political....does this come as expected to most people....or are you shocked at how much / little it is? Just working out how aware people are of state taxes / expenses etc.

Agreed lol.

So every 75p is like some sort of MRSA lottery ticket and a super long waiting list should i need to actually use the NHS?

I do like having the option of being able to call an ambulance should I need it though, knowing not every country in the world has that luxery lol

I'm not sure it's quite accurate to say that the one directly pays for the other.

It's not 75p per litre though is it?? It's well over £1.00 now so more money is going into the Governments pockets.

Status: online 		Doesn`t surprise me at all, like I said years ago to all these moaning anti-smokers, once they`ve strangled the life out of us they`ll need something else to turn to and you can be sure it will be things we`d struggle to get by without like food, fuel, motor vehicles, socialising.

100% spot on there buddy, they'll squeeze the life out of one thing then move onto something else when they can't get no more money out of it. Labour, Tories and the Lib Dems are all the same, this country is to expensive to run hence all the high prices on fuel, food etc etc.

you also forgot to mention the corporation tax the petrol giants have to pay as well, that runs into billions too

By spent, I'm assuming you mean on new roads and infrastructure.

You would be right, however a vast majority of the tax revenue is spent evening out the negative externalities caused from transport use.

The cost of these negative externalities are around £25 billion a year.

The government then spent £15 billion on new roads and maintenance.

This equates to in total £40 billion in expenditure.

Road users paid in total £42 billion in various forms of indirect taxation for said year.

All govt. tax goes into a big bucket, from which every piece of expenditure is paid for - so you're right, it's not like one directly pays for the other...but what they earn in petrol tax is surprisingly very close to NHS expenditure - so effectively, this is how the NHS is paid for. It's like if you earnt income from multiple sources:

- 5k from dividends
- 25k from wage
- 4k from capital gains

Then you spent

- 5k on food
- 10k on housing
- 10 on bills
- 5k on clothing

Then you bought a new car...you'd know that you had up to 4k to spend directly from cap gains that could go on repayments.

That's why it's interesting. These 2 figures are much closer than I expected, and it goes to show the true cost of all the NHS improvements we voted for over the past few years.

I don't think many people realise the real impact of govt. spending because most of our taxes are hidden - how many people get a VAT bill? How many could say how much tax they pay in a week? Not many....all this is so built into our lifestyles that we don't realise around 50% of all the country earns goes in tax.
