Most children admit that Video games cause aggresion - 17 May 2008 09:29
Does this surprise you?

Most children believe that playing violent computer games does lead to aggressive behaviour, according to a survey by the broadcasting regulator.
Two thirds of those aged between 12 and 15 said that violence in games had more of an impact on behaviour than violence in television or films, the study by Ofcom found.

Amazing.
Whenever they interview children on TV, the little halfwits can barely string a cohesive narrative.
I'm wondering just how vocal these kids were when asked the question.

"Does playing GTA 4 make you want to steal a car, do drugs, shoot guns and pimp women?" (Real balanced huh?)
"Yeah, cos like...innit."

I also think the braindead parents who ignore the certification on the games have some answering to do.
It's no different than letting a 6 year old watch Zombie Flesh Eaters.

"Naah don' worry 'bout Romeo. 'E's clever innit. E knows iss only a game/film innit."

And then you have the moron parents who let their kids have pc's/laptops in their bedrooms and don't monitor what they're doing.
Ignorance isn't a defence.

"'e needs it to do 'omework"
Yeah, cos little Johnny really is a shining academic star.

I'm sick to death of hearing slack jawed parents talk about their little ASBO wearing mutant swine child doing "'omework" online.
Sorry luv, what was that? A bit of easy cut and paste plagiarism?

...sorry, what was the question again?

Of course they have an impact. Some studies show they have an impact.

A child playing a game where they get to **** prostitutes and kill cops must surely have a negative impact?

Hollywood et al is responsible for a great deal of society's increasing ill-feeling. It is dappy, deluded, and disingenuous to suggest otherwise.

That's quite a claim you make there.

Not really quite an anything. Just a viewpoint that many others echo.

Young people are especially influenced by all kinds of media.

Gotta disagree with you there pal.
I grew up like a lot of my generation watching 5th generation bootleg video nasties.
Zombies, Maniacs, Psychos, Alien Sex Fiends...did me no damage whatsoever.

And get this, before video games were readily available, books were the big thing and some of those books were considered subversive whilst others were demonised by the moral crusaders.

You want to blame games?
You want to blame films?

At what point do you stop shifting the blame and accept that some people are fuc.ked in the head regardless of what you put in front of them.

Perhaps my lot from Generation X were made aware of the law of consequence; do something wrong and you're screwed.
Take away discipline, respect and authority and you're left with a turd of a problem.

Video games aren't the cause, but they're certainly a catalyst for the scapegoaters who want to shift the blame.

So no. I don't agree with your kneejerk reaction.

As for society's increasing ill-feeling, my finger's aimed at the political and religious sector.

I haven't read all of your post yet. However, you might claim that you haven't been influenced negatively (or positively) by films, tv, or media, but I doubt this is truly the case. Though, it is obviously correct to say that not every player of GTA will turn into a violent kid/adult or cop killer.

We are ALL influenced by mainstream communication media. Increasingly we are even terrorized by it.

Does media reflect or direct, do we immitate it or does it immitate us? I think I am Bruce Fecking Lee in a fight because of the movies I'll tell you what. Ah, King of the Hill... now there's a good influence!!

I didn't say I've never been influenced by the media, I said it did me no damage.

Being influenced to buy a song you heard on the radio is a slightly different thing to shooting up some school because you worshipped at the altar of Doom.

I have a friend who decided to inject heroin as a direct result of watching that rather graphic scene in 'Pulp Fiction' where John Travolta sticks a needle in his arm.

This friend admits that he was always curious about heroin, but until he actually saw just how 'normal' it looked in that movie he had never even come close to doing it.

I don't believe that films, music, and video games etc actually 'make' people do anything.

But I do believe that when things such as violence, drugs and rape are portrayed in way that does not show it's full horror, impressionable people, whether they be kids or adults can be easily influenced by the glamourous way in which these are often portrayed.

True but it seems to me that violence and crime have always been glamourised by the media, some might argue that this functions as a safety valve for society?

Yes, you're right.

Even from the folk tales of the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians to Shakespeare to James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart movies. Violence and crime have always been glamourised.

But in this 'happy slapping' media/internet age it seems to have reached a new level of dysfunctionality. Where a child can type a request for 'horrific war footage' or 'sexual assault' into google and then be exposed to some of the worst images that the internets most depraved minds can muster.

I fear It'll all end in tears

I agree with power junkie completely on this.
Today its video games. 50 years ago it was rock music.

All satans work i tell thee!

It's got nothing to do with the justice system or the failure of parents at all... it's obviously games, films and music.

Marrilyn Manson summed it up quite nicely when his music was blamed for the shootings at columbine. He questioned the society they were living in and when he was asked what he would say to the children if he could go back in time to before the shooting he said he wouldnt say anything... he would have listened to them instead.

IMO it may push somoene over the edge who was going to do such an act, but I dont think a sane person can honestly say that they'd harm another human because of a film...
