I know a guy who has decided to lose a minimum of 7lbs a week through strict dieting and lots of cardio.

He is obese, at 5ft 7 and 18 stone.

He's about two weeks in and he appears to be doing what he said he would, but is this a safe amount of weight to shed in such a timeframe?

If he sticks to it, it'll work out at losing two stone a month. His goal is to lose at least 4 stone, but ideally six.

I don't know him very well (he's a friend of a friend) but he's a nice guy and I'd hate for him to become ill.

Whilst he may lose 7 lb for the first week or two due to water loss etc, expecting to lose this consistently, or anything like that is absolute madness.

1lb of fat is 3500 calories. That means to lose 7lb in a week he must somehow lose 24500 calories. Given that his maintenance level may be 2500 calories whereby he neither gains nor loses, simply by not eating a thing for the week will only account for 17500 calories. He must therefore burn off (over and above normal calorie expenditure ie cardio) another 7000 calories. As you can see, the idea is ludicrous. Even losing 4lb he's got to be asking himself how much of this is actually fat.

The body is programmed to hold onto fat at all costs during times of severe calorie restriction. It is a survival mechanism. Instead it will catabolise plenty of muscle to fuel bodily needs. Less muscle = less calories burned at rest as it is metabolically active. Less calories burned at rest is the last thing you want when trying to shed fat. He seriously risks becoming a "skinny fat person".

Partyboy thanks for that, I suspected as much.

I will print what you've said off, and show it to him. If he still persists in going down this route then he'll only have himself to blame, if and when he becomes unstuck.

Way too much imo, maybe get away with it for the first 3 weeks after that could/will cause him a lot of problems, a steady 3 pounds a week for 19 weeks would be easier/healthier and sustainable plus thats his 4 stone lost, losing too much weight too quickly, imagine the excess skin??????????????
