there has been a large amount of talk lately of
a) fast food
b) the rising price of supermarket food (proper food)

i do not have kids and am not in a rush to have any, being single would put pay to this anyway but i saw the "chicken nuggetts for kids thread" and it got me thinking about the members on here that have kids and whether their kids eat "right"

a bit of background to me, my dad used to train and has a width of shoulders that ANYONE on here would be proud of, he is also now skinny fat, the shoulders showed up with the belly but he is 60 next year so gave up proper training a good few years ago

he used to eat steak all of the time but never sort of pushed me into the direction of proper eating (in a BB sense)

my mother eats next to f all and will not eat from anywhere but her house, her mums and her close friends (no takeaways, etc)

as kids we rarely went to fatdonalds, kfc, etc but she advocates ready meals, pot noodles, chocolate, etc (i know this as she keeps sending it to me now ive moved out)

just a thought, do the members with kids force their kids to eat appropriately in this day and age?

We are pretty careful as to what our son eats.

We don't have any white products in the house so all his toast/sarniest are wholemeal and we get him kiddies brown pasta too.

We are lucky that he loves fruit and veg too. His diet is pretty good tbh.

I'd never feed him convenience food on a regular basis.

He has had a Macdonalds (once) and no doubt he'll have more but that'll be a treat.

He does eat crisps and sweets but not regularly

Never really had to 'force' her to eat appropriately. As soon as she was on solid food she ate a well-balanced diet of freshly cooked food. She does occasionally eat fast food (mainly when she is at a friend's house) but in all honesty she doesn't really think much of it. She doesn't consume mountains of sweets either and dislikes sugary fizzy drinks. It's all about getting the taste buds used to good food right from day one.

On a related note I find it annoying in family-style restaurants to have to buy her something from the adult menu because the child's one is full of crap.

My son's general diet I feel is very good. He loves a really big variety of fruit and veg, and we rarely have white bread in the house so he is used to wholemeal.

He also eats normal wholeweat pasta and it's his favourite lol.

He's a vegetarian too, but he eats fish, so I have to be even more careful.

Only downfall with us is probably too much sweets as he tends to have some every couple of days at least - problem being he'll see his grandparents or go out with his friends and they are all getting him something. but again, it's a little bit really in the context of a good diet.

He's a fcking ganit though I tell you that, he is only 3 and has two weetabix for brekkie! maybe some fruit after too lol

never known anything like it

Just a good level of moderation. She gets treats, she gets good food.

Don`t force them to eat anything really, biggest problem for me is that they eat pretty healthy with their Mother for most of the time ie Meat, Potatoes, Veg etc except the eldest girl who`s been a Vegetarian since she was about 5 years old, so when they come down I tend to want to spoil them a bit with things they don`t get to enjoy normally.

Go for it.

Seeing as i have had various jobs where i have had to cook for kids and also spent loads of time around my little cousins i think it varies really

Parents will generally feed their kids by the way that they were fed as a kid and also what fits in with their lifestyle

Take modern day chavs, very young ages to be having kids and all they know is takeaways and fast food and not one of them knows how to cook, this IMO is due to the way parents raised them

My mum raised me with the ability to cook and also fed me healthy things from when i was a kid so i developed a sense of broadened taste and as such i wasn't afraid to really try anything once, some things i have grown to like over time though.

My aunt on the other hand, (mums sister) fed my cousin over processed crap and other things that weren't good for him simple because she didn't have the time to cook for him properly, yet came form the same household as my mum did (and yes she can cook very well). Because of this my cousin got very overweight quickly and it aggravated his asthma, i was over in NY for 3 months and i showed her what it was like to cook fast, healthy and cheap meals that my cousin usually couldn't wait to eat. 1 year on now hes back at a healthy weight for his age and continues to eat healthy all because someone shared knowledge

to summarise kids eating crap is just down to lacking info on how to cook, how to shop, and how to time manage more than anything. give people this knowledge and i dont think they should have any problems.

From experience fast food is more expensive then preparing a proper meal at home anyway

edit: also make it fun for kids as well which is half the battle won anyway

interesting replies, i was just thinking, in one of my in-depth thoughts on the day that i often share on the world of mt

me ma was saying not long ago how me and our kid were good at eating veggies and always had been, it was always a sunday roast on sundays, which i miss a bit now ive moved out, she did sometimes do meals that were not that bad but were by no means great, often if there was little time to prepare and i was moaning i wanted to eat so that i could get in the gym

she hates mcdonalds and we rarely went but other kids i grew p with went more often, my old neighbour even went to mcdonalds for their lads 21st bitrthday (i'd have slapped my mum in the face if that had been suggested for my 21st bash )

however when i am at uni i go to a fast food place, usually kfc every week, once a week as a sort of treat for the weeks (relatively) good eating, it also prevents me having to sit in me car eating tuna as well as giving us the chance to socialise (the lads i know are not really in my classes anymore)
