I wanted to get a dog, more specificly a german shepard, I dont really want to buy one, so i was looking at pet rescue places on the net.
I have seen 2, 1 is 10 years old, but we have 3 cats already and i dont know if it will get on well with them, plus, do german sheps only live to the age of 12? this dog is due to be "destroyed" on tuesday but i know if i went to look at it i will take it home for that sole purpose.
The next 1 i saw was a underweight 2 year old, this sounds like the 1 i would like to go for, but in my mind i want them both lol.
Are sheps good dogs to be around the home? do they chew everything?

I'm not too up on how long they live but I'd guess that it won't live long past 10. A few years at most

i wish i never looked on that site now lol, makes me sad when i see stuff like that happen.
Yesturday i was at work and a staf about 1 year old, came into the shop cause the owner didnt tie it up, then we put a call out for the owner and he came he picked the dog up by the collar around its neck and litterally checked it to the floor, then as he was walking out he booted the dog, the kid was like 16 years old, me being at work cant do anything if i wanted to keep my job, ****ing pisses me off these little ****s, [/rant].

A ten year old GS is towards the end of its life really, unusual for it to be very active really at that age, due to the problems that they have with there hips and athritis. Thats not every one obviously just in general.
I'd go for the two year old and get her on a good diet, decent training and fingers crossed you should have a decent dog,
I'd try and find out why it is underweight though, as if it has been mistreated then there may have been physical abuse too and then it may take along time to bring the dog round if at all, also it may have a tendancy to bite and you dont want a GS clamping its jaws around your arm

I'm on my second GSD.
First one was close to 11yo when he died.
Now got a bitch. Bit neurotic but very friendly with both kids and cats.
Both were 'rescue' dogs. A decent centre will fill you in on their background.
The bitch I have just now came with a fair bit of 'baggage' but bearing in mind we're her fourth or fifth home it's not surprising. Settled in very quickly really. Still hates other dogs though but recall has always been spot on so no problem as long as you keep your eyes open.
I'd recommend a Shepherd to anyone but look into it's background if from a rescue.
A lot of patience may be needed, especially while they settle in.

It's the one breed I don't like myself... I know this is bias but it's based on bad experiences.
I've been biten by my GF's parents GS and it bite my GF.
My brother has only been bit the once and we were just walking through an estate and it ran of it's front yard at us and tried biting of us, we were kids at the time.
A mate at school had his face ripped half off and had plastic surgery when his best mates GS attacked him.
My grandad had 2 as guard dogs, that's what they are good at.
I think they are very aggresive (could blame that on the owners but they are susceptible to it at the very least), brilliant dogs for the police and as guard/working dogs but not a fan as a pet.
You will get lovers and haters of any breed but I am in the hater camp TBH.
I have a Boxer, I know a some people won't like them as they are puppies for life so great for me as I have a young family.

The other place to consider is to look after a police breeder.
The police will give you the dog, you look after her for 2-3 years, they then breed from her and then once they have bred you get to keep her.
They pay for her food but its complete ****e cheap stuff and i believe they are paying for my freinds dogs training.
They are agressive towards other dogs in my experience and they get bored VERY easily... they have a good brain and they need to be kept active.
Viva, my mates dog, needs constant puzzles etc so we put dog biscuits in toys for her to get out, peanuts butter in tubes, biscuits hidden in the house and the radio on etc otherwise she litterly chews the plaster off the walls in boredom. and shes only left for 3-4 hours during the day.
She is very lively though, loves being outside, she pines all the time shes inside, open the back door and shes gone, runnign around the graden all night like a loon, she loves it. Only negative thing ive found is that she jumps up a lot and is VERY stubborn, and when she jumps up she tends to nip the face sometimes as she snaps when shes happy. shes still very very young so training should get rid of all this buts its something my lab never did and neither did my retreiver, they were both great family pets and i would love another.
GS are not an easy dog, and not what i would class as a novice dog as they need a firm hand and good training, and a very active house. Otherwise the dogs mental state starts to go a bit haywire.

I got a bitch when she was 10 weeks old, admittedly she did chew everything in site, but they soon grow out of the habit, its only out of boredom they do this. We also had a cat at the time and they get on fine, the cat just stays out of the dogs way really.
Very loyal, intelligent dogs, how a dog reacts to people has a lot to do with how the dog has been brought up by the owner.
If somebody called to my house, the dog would growl and bark and scare the sh1t out of somebody but she has never bitten or attacked anybody.

Im on my 2nd hes about 11 i think.
Him and the bitch i had before are/were very loving animals so i think it all depends on there upbringing as to there nature just like most of us. the only thing i hate is the amount of fcking hairs he sheds when hes molting so he lives mostly in the garage and the garden

do you find yours have all loved being in the garden all day?
I've only got experience of one german sheperd so i wondered if this is a common trait of the animal as my retriever wasnt too fussed about being outside all the time, he'd rather lay on the kitchen lino floor in the shade.

Thanks. No she wasnt recently brushed, she's a short haired dog so there's not too many hairs to deal with.

Really nice breed IMO
Get from hip checked parents is my recommendation, as I've never known a breed so prone to hip dysplasia!

PJ im the total opposite of sensative. in fact my gf called me an emotionless rock nice gf. lol
oh as drab says, i forgot about the hip thing. its done by a score isnt it? hip score...
