Problem with squats/deadlifts - 20 May 2008 21:19
My problem is that they seem to work my arms more than my legs.

Is it likely that my arms are just undertrained? Or that I'm not doing the squats/deadlifts right? I've watched lots of videos etc and it seems like I'm doing it correctly...

Hard to tell what you mean.

Holding the bar in a squat position can tire your shoulders.

As for deadlifts I'm guessing your talking about your forearms/grip?

Post a vid up of your squating and deadlifting.

Squats shouldn't really be working your arms, you sure they are just not tired/aching from supporting the weight?

Deads do work your arms though, so if you have weak arms they may fail before your back. You could use straps as said above to help with this but then you might suffer with your grip in other exercises. May be good to train your grip strength up and only increasing your weights when your grip allows.
Age- 18, 6ft

Bench - 130kg x1
Squat - 180kgx2
Dead - 180kg x2

Yeah I think this is probably it, my arms tire before the deadlifts get chance to properly workout the muscles they're supposed to be working out.

I'm guessing that's something that will rectify itself in time as my arms get stronger?

And yeah, I keep my arms straight, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I do find my grip fails after a while on deadlifts. Is it a better idea to use straps or just use it as a way of strengthening my grip over time?

Two schools of thought really:

1) use straps, the deadlift will then be immediately useful for your back
2) don't use straps, stick it out for a while - your grip will catch up and then deadlifts will be great for your back

I went with #2 and don't regret it one bit as you end up with a strong grip quite quickly

Chalk works wonders mate. Reverse grip makes a big difference too, stops the bar rolling out of your hands. Work at it and you'll adapt.

Straps are not really needed for most people imo.

Totally agree, chalks is the way forward. You'll find your grip will catch up quickly enough if you keep training it, so forget straps on deadlifts. Build your grip.
