Assuming your of a normal size, bar + 2x20kg disks is the place to start.

Ah well that's not the same as never really done them is it now..?

Just whack some weight on the bar and see what it feels like. Don't go crazy though, don't want to hurt yourself.

How many reps and sets do people normaly do on deadlifts?

Is it the usual 3x8 (well usual for me anyway) or is it lower, for some reason?

I'm not totaly sure on how a rep for a deadlift is counted.....
Do you lift the weight, then set it back on the floor, before lifting it again?

I presume holding it up, would hurt the back.

My guess is that doing 5 reps would just mean, keeping the smallest possible pause once the bar had been put back on the floor.........is that right?

you can go as fast as you want, but the faster you go the more your form is compromised.

one rep is lifting it, locking out, and putting the weight back on the floor.

Start light, and get your form sorted and get comfortable with the movement. After a few weeks, start slowly adding weight.
