Tips and tricks
-
24 May 2008 08:55
I'm competing for the very first time at the Severn Valley, and have only been to one contest (BSM Mid Qual 2008) to have a nosey. I'm just looking for any little tips and tricks that will help the day go more smoothly. Any little gems on technique, support kit, what to have in your bag, nutrition on the day etc will be gratefully recieved. Thanks all.

from a fellow beginner, couple tips: bring plenty of fluids! The day willbe long and gruelling, you dont want your legs to cramp or generally run out of fluids or salts. isotonic drinks and normal water should do. Personally i neck loads of caffeine throughout the comp, either pro plus tabs or just caffeine drinks - usually both. towel is a good one to have if it is a hot day, and even if not if you sweat like me Think about your footwear. is it best to do overhead work with the same footwear than farmers, and so on. Some painkillers/ibuprofein in the bag might also become handy, and some clean tissue. And of course the whole kit to clean up tacky.

theres a technique on frame carry with your wrists, when you grip handles twist your wrists inwards then grip and stand up, your wrists will straighten out and your grip will last much longer!!! on the stone roll it onto one hand on the floor then push your other hand under it, if you got long enough arms you can inter lock your fingers, but if tacky allowed just use hands to grip it axle, havent practised that one yet havent practised draging one either, just going to lean forward as much as possible or backwards if pulling it im going to wear my support gear all day and for all events, keep you warm and help support you. think i may get someone to slap me up before event to get me mad

Tacky is allowed on stones 99% of the time! I would recomend superglue - if you rip a callouse you can glue it back on;) and I recomend diorlyte( this is some thing you drink if you have sever diorea) if you get cramp it will sort it asap!

As Dale said, tacky is allowed in most comps so I wouldn't recommend inter-locking fingers, if you end up dropping the stone the weight of the stone pulling on your fingers is going to lock them tight and make it bloody hard to separate them. You could end up with your fingers smashed to pieces by the stone.

There is no tacky allowed it's only one 100kg stone i don't want tacky left on the barrels and the plate. Supa glue is a very good idea i have lost callouses several times.
Whey consortium in it’s 6th year of putting your money back into the sport. More than any of the other bulk suppliers.

DW is competing at severn valley so he wont be able to use tacky as its not allowed. didnt really think of my hands getting crushed, its hard to move any stone without tacky, interlocking fingers makes it easier i found without it, as it just slides out my hands as cant grip it.

It's only a 100kg stone which I dare say may have some residue on; Either way, It's strongman so you'll be strong enough or you won't be.

Also bring snack foods to nibble on. You don't want a four course dinner but something to give you a trickle of energy throughout the day. The burgers etc on sale might be ok if you eat half of one between events.

I think I'm thinking about it too much lol, it's my first ever strength contest so I've built it up in my mind, and I'm still not sure i lift to a high enough standard to be honest. I'll TRY to just enjoy the day and work hard and see what happens! And theres no way I'll be able to stomach burgers!

Just try and keep busy this week, do all the things you'd usually put off like putting up shelves, organising your CDs etc etc
