Does anybody know what sort of criteria you have to meet in order to get one of these operations on the NHS? I am curious.

As far as im aware, you have to be very owerweight to the point where you are severely risking your own health. You can have it done privately for around 11k though. It certainly is not something i would want, it pretty much means no semi big meals ever again. You can have it widened at a later date, but the surgery is meant to be agony to recover from.

It costs about 6K in all if you go private but im sure everywere is different. It is not fixed either unless you get the staples. Im not aware of the criteria but my aunt had a staple last week. Not really sure why as she has manages to loose half her body weight before, but she is a lazy git.

I heard it was 11k average in the UK, if you wanted proper aftercare? Which i imagine you would with this type of surgery (Though this may have included future adjustments to the band). I know it would be cheaper abroad, but with surgery like that, i wouldnt consider having it done anywhere but near home. It may have changed by now, average cost of a boob job fell dramatically, so i imagine this could have too.

The criteria vary by PCT and generally it's considered on a case by case basis. There isn't a magic BMI figure at which people become eligible. The set criteria do include a minimum age (18) and experience of sustained and failed attempts to lose weight through conventional methods. The patient must be physically and mentally suitable for the procedure and should understand the consequences of the procedure in the future.

Well you are right Furyan some places do charge that. But i know a couple of family friends who are/have had this op and they have all gone for the same company due to the support, dietry needs, after care, adjustments to the band every few months. Im hoping someone could shed some light on this subject as a family member of mine is having the band next friday. Such as implications etc. Not sure if any of the healthy action crew know anything?

What the difference between bypass and band? I know Bypass is a risky procedure as my friends mum died last year from this operation

It's a case by case decided by the Trust under recommendation from a surgeon

should just give them a RHF progress pics to inspire them (they are amazing by the way, I showed them to a client and it has lit a fire under her) and tell them to try without it first
