Just cant progress with chest
-
11 June 2008 14:28
Long term i have always struggled to increase weight for chest exercises despite the fact that my deadlift and squats seem to progress nicely and are quite good. I am 6'2" and around the 16 stone mark with quite long limbs (lanky mofo !!) I deadlift 170 KGs for reps and squat 140 Kgs but i struggle to bench 80 kgs (barbell) Does anyone else have this problem, can you recommend any suggestions ?

Post up routine and diet, it could be either/both/neither.

Back/Biceps Deads - 3*6 Lat pull - 3x8 Cable Row - 3x8 Super set with Kinda row thing on cable preacher curl machine! Barbell curl - 3*8 Maybe throw in a couple of sets of hammer dumbell curls to finish Chest/Triceps Barbell bench - 3*8 (currently using smith machine for this) Inc Bench - 3*8 Low Cable flies - 3*8 Super set with Machine Flies Tricep dip machine - 3*8 Super set with Close grip chest press Tricepo pushdown - 2*8 superset with Rope pushdown - 2*8 Legs/Shoulders Squats - 3*6 Leg Press - 3*8 Ham curls - 3*8 Calf raise - 3*15 Mil Press - 3*8 couple of sets of dumbell press seated to finish off depending on time My diet is average at best of times so no point in putting this in really which maybe part of the problem, though any comments on routine more than welcome!

Yeha but surely its not just that as wouldnt my other lifts be stagnating if it was just due to diet?

Possibly, but unless you cover this particular base you will never find out.

i was the same for years mate. i'm 30yrs old, 6ft 2" and weight around 225-230lbs. i would like to think that i am quite strong however i have always lacked in strength in my chest area. although it has improved my chest development is still a weak point. i train hard 4 times a week and have a good solid diet of 7 small regular meals a day. if i'm really being picky its my upper and inner chest that really lacks develpoment.

Im weaker at pushing movements. Still progress in size and strength, but no where near as much as Legs or Back. Although I'd never expect it be as good as them, as Chest/Shoulders/Triceps cover less area than Back and Legs.

i too struggle with pushing/pressing than pulling and legs, thing is though im my case i attribute it to instability problems with one of my shoulders. However i'm slowly increasing of late the weight i'm pressing on decline and to a point, incline (both BB) My particular problem currently is lack of upper regions of the chest, in fact all may chest is just fat more than any muscle. All i do are the above mentioned exercises for chest. I do: Decline BB Bench Incline BB Bench (maybe incline too high @ 40deg ish) (back work) cable row, T-bar row, bent over laterals
Injured!! Squat 170kgx1 105kgx25 Dead 200x1 Decline Bench 80x6

sort your diet as numero uno, its hard to evaluate your growth and training performance when your diet has a direct link to both of them. if your diet is not suitable to create an anabolic (muscle building) envrionment then your body will not fight against the tide. The human body is a tremendously effecient system, unless you have all the ducks in a row you will not grow nor improve your lifts. Chest is a lagging point for me but its a common area for most people as well keep at it, dont enter the more = more mentallity sort your diet as best you can and pop into the diet forum for help

nope, you just havent been training long enough even for pros and top level amatuers, the chest only really took shape once they had been knuckling down with hard training for a fair few years. the chest isnt a muscle like quads/lower back etc that get worked everyday by normal day to day tasks. unless you go up stairs push up style

to be honest I was stuck at bench, then I focused more, got angary and gave some welly, I added 10KG in a few months, which for me is usually about 1yrs progress. Having the balls to go for (and get) that extra is what it takes. I found having good spotters helps, they will be there if I need it but other than that none of this index finger assistance rubbish when the rep is slow.
