How do you split cost in a relationship?
-
11 June 2008 16:30
Just interested to hear other views on this - i have always paid for things in the past but always seem to get taken for granted. In the relationships that i have had where there is give and take they always seem to work out better. I know it is the gentlemanly thing to do to pay for things/everthing - but it never seems to work out well from experience.

A middle ground should be established at the earliest opportunity.

I'm married but we have seperate accounts. We each have our own allocated bills to pay but TBH neither of us took the time to establish if we pay equal amounts. At the end of the day both our incomes are 'ours'. If my wife is short and needs money (as she earns less) then assuming I have spare funds she'll usually get it...... at a favourable rate

My OH owns a fair bit more than me so we do try to go 50/50 now i'm on a better wage... But a few mnths back it was more like 60/40... Didn't like it really but you have to accept it sometimes... A good friend of mine his misses pulls in over 60k a year without bonus's and he hate's it, it has nearly cost them thier marriage a couple of times..
Never forget that you are unique, just like everyone else

All you can do is keep your wits about you and play it by ear IMO Some people have more spare cash than others , it doesn't necassarily make them a gold digger or anything - of course , if someone is taking advantage of your good nature , you need to be able to identify that and put it right , but I think it would be wrong to start 'making rules' - no one likes a penny pincher [:D I think being able to judge individual situations like this on their own merit , rather than working to a fixed set of rules is going to be very important life skill

Maybe I'm soft but, before we were married, I paid the mortgage, gas, water, electricity, council tax, insurance, food bill, nights out and still gave the fiancee £500 a month. Not sure if the division of payment really matters unless you're skint.

Hmmm. At the mo seeing this chick ( Superwomen ) Lovely Girl Skint, SO i been Paying for drinks etc all though i pay for 2 rounds and she wont have any more so she dont take the piss, And i dont mind at the mo as im waiting for my mortgage to go through. IMO if i was living with some one it would be 50/50 and the odd treats to each other.

we have a joint account both of wages go into it we both take money out when we want to big purchases are consulted but mainly we both use it like normal plus she gets paid in the middle of month, me at end so we live on my wages for the first half of month, and hers for last half!

We split most things, but I earn more so sometimes treat her (like to a holiday in Paris and the odd meal), and always pay for petrol. The idea of splitting is so she desn't go stupid or take me for granted
