My advice would be not to get caught up in the megapixel furore. A decent sensor/lens is of far greater importance.

I 2nd PB on that, I got a Ricoh R7, lens is really good, wide angle, 7times zoom and its 8MP I think, about £150 but worth it.

Thanks... Think I'm gonna find four or five and get her to pick her top three from them, and then choose one of them... I would just let her choose, but it takes all the fun out of birthdays... Your's has made the top five......

MP are only important if you wish to print your photos at very large sizes. They make absolutely no difference at normal size prints. For example, a 5 megapixel image will be good for an A4 size uncropped pic without loss of quality. How often would you want to blow up and print a picture larger than this? The only time I could see that you would want a bigger size is for single or family portraits, which you would go to a professional photographer anyway.

With the little I do know, I agree with you PB. However, she is a Women, and apparently size does matter?? Well, at least in the MP stakes.....

I bought a Sony Cybershot about 2 years ago and its the best camera i have ever had to this day. Its small, thin and easy put in the pocket and the pictures that come off it are supurb.

Not sure how much they are these days but bet they have come down a lot. I know i have had mine over 2 years and still very very good and could not recommend more highly

IMO the things that matter for a camera are (in no particular order)

- physical size
- lens quality, ie do the pictures have a good colour balance, is there blurring at the edges, how sharp are the pictures
- lens zoom (optical zoom)
- mega pixels (only to an extent)
- battery life
- speed, ie how long does it take for the picture to be taken after the button has been pressed
- user friendly menu system
- size of the LCD screen
- flash option, ie red eye reduction
- how good is the camera in poor light
- how good is the camera indoors
- how good is the camera outdoors on a normal day (often cameras fall down here which is usually where a good amount of pics will want to be taken)
- price
