ORIGINAL: galenkia I could think of worse countrys we take people from. Exactly. Surely an influx of educated Americans would do more for the country than Iraqi refugees who cant read or write and who cause an increase in violance and crime? Its only fair that you have the choice to apply for citizenship to the country of your parents if you wanted to. My farther being a Greek immigrant I feel I should have the right to Greek citizenship if I wanted to move over there in the future for example.

ORIGINAL: Apollo Surely an influx of educated Americans would do more for the country ............... I think you'll find the educated ones will stay in America. What we'll get over here are the Millions of layabouts and sponger who've heard our benefits system is more generous than their welfare system. IE it's easier to do f*ck all here than it is in most American cities. No, thanks. The Aussies have got it right - prove you have something to offer the country that would be hard to source without you, or f@ck off.

Good points. I think this country is far too generous to Asylum seekers. They totally take advantage of things over here. The ones I know make a mockery of the police when they break the law. My relatives in Greece however tell me that Islmaic asylim seekers over there dont get benefits and have to work hard for a living and will get a good beating by the police when they act clever with them.

I don't have a problem with introducing the Aussie system here.We are too lax. Bit late now though.

I think that Assylum seekers who repeatedly break the law should be removed from the country ASAP.

I'm yet to hear of a American call them British-American, so not sure if we would have many migrants really. I guess most would goto there 'homelands'. Not sure really what to think of it really, dont think it will open up a flood gate of people. But cant agree with 2nd 3rd generation claiming citizenship.

Its because English roots arent as strong as cultures like meditarenean. Plus the main ethnicity of the Americans is Anglo-Saxon so children of British immigrants born in America are totally absorbed into that culture. Whereas children of Italian or Greek immigrants for example will be proud of the title "Greek-American" or "Italian American" many generations down the line.

British settlers were probably never a minority, and Britain was the colonial master until independence, otherwise there would be British-Americans. The reason for strong Italian and Irish identity among americans is a legacy of them being penniless immigrants.

The Jewish and Greek Americans are very successful and still maintain their identities. To be honest I think its alot to do with having different religions which kept the cultures going over there. The Greek Orthodox church being different from the Catholic one for example. And the Jews have maintaind their identity all over Europe for centuries. I think that religion had a way of maintaining cultural identity.
